The Didact was supposed to be this big evil bad guy full of badness and he gets defeated by being pushed off a ledge.
No he wasn't. He's a morally conflicted character doing what he believes to be necessary, twisted by desperation and fear for his own people having learned what the Timeless One revealed. Not to mention that it's because of humanity that all of his children were murdered.
I suppose there was also that AN ANCIENT EVIL AWAKENZZZZ tagline floating about.
It's a marketing perspective that's meant to be misleading and not reveal the substance of the story - the same way "finish the fight" meant nothing in Halo 3 because it left 12 plot points either unresolved or introduced in the last mission, or "take back Earth" in Mass Effect 3 when it's the whole galaxy you have to save.
