Subject: Any linux users here who can help me out?

I use ubuntu 12.10 and I recently switched to kdm as my login screen, I installed it from the software center, and now I am wondering how to change my login theme with kdm?

I was wondering if anyone here can help, and then I will provide more information.

Thanks in advance.

Are you using Kubuntu or Ubuntu? KDM is for the KDE desktop. If you're on vanilla Ubuntu, you want GDM.

I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 and i downloaded the "KDE display manager for X11" from the software centre because I got bored of lightdm and wanted to give kdm a shot. It works, but I am just wondering now how I can switch the theme of the login into another theme which I downloaded from kde-look.org.

I believe if you log out, you can go to the log in screen and there will be an option to change it.

EDIT: I'm not entirely sure, but wouldn't you have to fully install KDE to use KDM?

Right. KDM is developed specifically for the KDE plasma desktop, though. While some features may work on Ubuntu, it won't be 100% compatible with vanilla Ubuntu because it uses the GNOME desktop. Try GDM, which is the GNOME implementation of the X11 display manager (XDM).

I tried GDM as well and found that it is too plain and changing just the background of the login screen is so hard. Am I right? Or do you think changing the background customizing the GDM login screen is easy?
Also, so does this mean that I shouldn't be / can't use kdm while using ubuntu 12.10 unity?

Well I just isntalled the kde display manager for X11 straight from the software center for ubuntu and it worked fine. It is a bit slow though, not as fast as lightdm and gdm for sure.

Format your PC and install Windows 7.

With kdm, im trying to change the entire theme. When i was using gdm, I couldn't find a way to change the wallpaper. SO yes, with gdm, I was trying to change the background of the login screen.

Switch back to GDM and try GDM3Setup. It's a GUI that allows you to change the login screen without messing around in a terminal.
