It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

In regards to just telling them how I feel; I get the feeling that they won't understand it, as I didn't turn out how they wanted.

Or you could compromise with them and instead of joining a sports team why not join some kind of club you are interested in at school?
The problem with this is that the local schoolboard is in the middle of a "Job Action", so all extra-curriculars are suspended until further notice.

Like my post said, they're trying to understand you but simply do not know how. Being the opposite of them is what is making it hard. Still, try to compromise with them. You seem to be handing it well and not going about it in the whole, "My parents are enemy number one!"

Shakes Magic 8 Ball

You're incredibly naive and lack any responsibility. Your parents can do all they can to turn you into an athlete, but only you can stop being afraid of the world.

  • 12.06.2012 5:53 PM PDT

how about you just play a sport?

There are ZERO drawbacks.

In his defense, he's 15. He clearly stated he doesn't want to grow up yet and if my 15-year-old told me that I'd understand completely.

I know that 15 is the age where things start changing but I don't think his wishes are too out there.

Starting work young is so smart.

See how much you'll be laughing at the athletes in school when you're sitting on $20k in your senior year.

I was.

This is true but if it's not what he WANTS then it's a different matter entirely.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

Tell them that their life style isn't for you maybe?

I realize that getting a Job is good. But OP's still in High School, if he wanted, he could take AP classes so that extra time could be spent studying, he wouldn't have to get out of his comfort zone just yet, it still looks good for college, and his parents should be completely fine with it.

No, they really aren't. Sports are healthy and they look good on college application letters or resumes. Getting a job earns you money (which teaches you how to use it) and it gives you skills that you'll need. Dealing with other people is something everyone has to do, and if you can do it well you'll be more successful.

I say get a job. Not every job requires you to be around people all the time. And there's money.

You don't have to play sports but try not to be completely anti social. You should embrace the outdoors.

Parents give this kid:

- Shelter
- Clothing
- Food
- Education
- A future
- Love
- A computer
- Internet access
- Xbox 360
And this is just what I know for sure since he's on this site and from what he's said. I know the list goes on way longer.

Yup. TOTAL jackasses...

Getting out of your comfort zone is a good thing. It's how you grow.

It makes me feel really old to say this, but I have to agree with OP's parents on this one. I'm not the most social person myself, but I definitely think that being social is healthy and I try to socialize when I can.

Sometimes, healthy stuff is uncomfortable. But that's life.

Sit down with your parents and have a talk, talk about the past and the future with them, I'm sure they'll understand.

Tell them exactly what you told us lol.

And get a job that would help you out.

Sometimes I am tempted to quit gaming. I can no longer play without seeing ponyphags, horrendously bad teammates and mexicans.

Gaming community, I want you to know that you suck.

Get good at life.

Secret Option #3...

Don't do either. Let them know that you don't agree with them, then don't listen to what they say when you think they're being irrational

I used to love playing soccer. I wish I didn't develop back problems I would love to play it again.

Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Maybe you would've been a professional athlete rather than a meth cook.

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

OP, your parents just care about you. They want you to be more social because being social is good for you.

While the snappy one-liners and snide remarks were expected, I've been pleasantly surprised by some of the actual good advice give.

Thanks for the help, guys. It's nice to get a perspective from adults who have been through this.

On a side note, I definitely do not hate my parents - I understand they are just looking out for my best interests. They can be lenient and "cool" in comparison to other parents, but on this particular issue things begin to go rather sour.
