If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

I don't always ban people but when I do I laugh uncontrollably...that's if I was a Forum Ninja.

Truth is a matter of perception.

The Button

Look for a job where you don't have to talk to many people, that's what I'm doing. You'll actually make some new friends over the course of working there and you'll make money.

You're incredibly naive and lack any responsibility. Your parents can do all they can to turn you into an athlete, but only you can stop being afraid of the world.
That's rather harsh and uncalled for since he's 15. Trying to stop yourself from being an introvert sucks and sometimes you simply can't change yourself.

Don't mistake a temptation for an opportunity.

Just get a job and save up the money, it won't hurt. If you're scared about having to help out customers around a store it really gets better as time goes on. You will feel satisfied knowing you were able to find an item someone was looking for (only applies if working at retail) ((I speak with experience from my first volunteer job))

Get a job. You are making yourself like you will explode if you have human contact. As a fellow introvert I can confirm that people are not that scary. A job will help you become more confident, and it will give you some money. Money is always good.

You used the term "anti-social" incorrectly.

Besides that, try a sport that doesn't require a team. Tennis, Golf, Ping-Pong.

It sounds like they just want you to be doing something. Take something you enjoy doing and find a to make it productive and/or profitable.

There is a large amount of tension between the both of us, and I'm being pressured quickly into a decision, and be extension out of my "cave", as my parents would call it.

Your parents are right. You have to break out of your shell. I'd recommend the sport team because it's a lot of fun, keeps you in shape (maybe curling doesn't, but whatever), and you'll meet a great group of people to hang out with.

At your job, you have to interact with strangers all day and if you're as introverted and awkward as you claim to be, then I wouldn't recommend that for you

Why are you here?

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to socialize with others?

Your situation is actually quite common, OP. You have to understand that as your parents they are only wanting what is best for you. Being highly social themselves it may be difficult for them to understand someone who is not.

Having said that, they seem to have started to understand but are fearful of you becoming so shy to the point it becomes a problem. In their eyes, getting a job is a good way to go about that. It will help you ease into the professional world while at the same time sharpen your social skills.

If I were you, I'd go with the job but look for a job with minimal social interaction. Admittedly, this may be difficult at your age with most job openings for you being in the food industry.

Or you could compromise with them and instead of joining a sports team why not join some kind of club you are interested in at school? The goal for them seems to be you socializing.

Personally, I think you would enjoy a job once you start reaping the benefits of a pay check. Living with your parents has massive benefits one of which is the lack of a need to pay for really anything at all. You could spend the money on anything you want, really.

Say you're not ready to do either and if they don't like it then they'll have to kick you out.

Very few parents would go that far.

  • 12.06.2012 7:19 PM PDT

What you will read will be the cold hard truth:

Your parents do not accept you for who you are and don't love you

I'm sorry OP

Join a sports team and makes some friends. The sooner you become less socially awkward the better, you'll thank your parents later I'm serious. Everyone needs to start growing up at some point. Being smart will only help you so much in life, you need social skills to move forward.
