I actually thought it was a really good film. People talk all the time about why it's such a terrible film and it really isn't. Would anyone care to give me some reasons why it supposedly sucks so badly?
The reason why I bring this up is because IGN made an article telling people to go vote for the worst film ever made on RiffTrax, and multiple films made it on there that should not have made the list, and I believe Spider-Man 3 to be one of them.
Was it the best superhero film ever, or at least, the best Spiderman film? That can be debated. I wouldn't say that it was a terrible, or even a bad film.
Here's one of the reasons why i liked the film. It really tested Peter Parker's character and moral convictions. When he found out that Flint Marko killed his uncle, he was consumed with pure rage and hate. This hatred would be multiplied with the symbiote, which would drive him to try and kill Flint and it would escalate to attacking Harry, and then eventually, Mary Jane. By the end of the movie, he tries to right the wrongs he committed, by resolving his conflict with Harry before he dies, and by telling Flint that he forgives him. Peter came full circle, and let his killer LIVE in the end because he understood the reasons why Flint did what he did, even if his methods were misguided.
Another thing to note, people say this movie sucked because Venom only appeared for 20 minutes or so. The thing is this movie isn't about Venom, it's about Peter. Venom was the final confrontation; it was his hate personified and hosted by Eddie Brock. By defeating the demon he created, he can move forward and become a better person as a result.
Speaking of antagonists, Harry and Marko were not bad. Marko was like-able in that he wasn't necessarily a bad guy. While his methods were misguided, his end goal, while not justified, was out of love for his daughter. And he didn't even purposely kill Uncle Ben, he only shot him because he was startled. In the end, I really felt bad for him and the scene where he was turned into sand and he tried to pick up the necklace with Penny in it, it truly broke my heart.
As for Harry, I completely understand his pain. When he saw Peter bring his dad's corpse into the room at the end of the 1st film, I don't think anyone else would think something other than "This guy just murdered my father". Yes, he wasn't exactly the nicest guy once he turned back to his old self, but that's another example of hate consuming someone's personality.
However, this does not dismiss it's flaws, which I do agree, to some extent, that it does have them. For one, Gwen Stacy is probably on screen for the shortest amount of time, next to her father. I actually wanted to see if the writers could make her an interesting character. Nope. Tossed away in her third scene.
Then, of course, is the scene outside of the dress shop and the one in the bar with Gwen and Mary Jane. If I can recall correctly, it was stated that the symbiote amplified behavior and emotions, not necessarily hate and aggression. Peter was already goofy in the previous films, and it's only amplified by the symbiote. The scene outside the shop was him showing his cocky/confident side, and the scene in the bar was just revenge for Mary Jane dumping him, who only did so on threats against her life, and to Peter, who had been dating her for at least 2 years at that point, found it completely out of place and he just lost it. So while the scenes were over the top, I can still partially justify them.
What are your thoughts on the Spiderman films? Love them? Hate them? Honestly, give me your thoughts.
TL:DR Spiderman 3 doesn't suck and it's completely underrated.
