...And so the hero crawled through the fissure on the surface of Tyr. There, the lone Dwarf stared into the cold, dark eyes of Soulblighter...The fiend hefted his blade over his shoulder as a flock of raven took upon his form...

The Forerunners made Gravemind, in my opinion, as a guardian/ruler of the flood, he wasn't a forerunner himself, like in my KOTOR comparison (the guardians made the computer that knows everything about the star forge, like how gravemind knows everything about the halos, they both live a long time, and they both are direct creations of the ancient races in both games).

Not a mad scientist. Just mad.

It's likely that anything on Halo is not affected by the activation. While the Flood spread throughout the galaxy would be wiped out, or die off eventually, the rest of the Flood on Halo are the Sentinels' duty to clean up.

Gravemind seems to be a suffering being, constantly lamenting his demise and being existent for infinitude. Well, I'm sure no one would object to putting him out of his misery and blowing him to kingdom come...

No that theory is not right at all, because in the halo novels and the story in the game states that the flood were discovered not created the forunners create the installations to contain them and prevent them from spreading all over the galaxy. Second of all the reason why he so intelligent is because he is created from his fallen brothers and species like us after awhile all of those minds put together do something in time.
