Subject: Larry Miller proposes Canada leaves the United Nations

So Larry Miller is my local representative for the conservative party and this guy has proposed Canada leaving the United Nations.

I know that won't happen but wouldn't that be a really bad thing...

Hey guys! You wanna hear a joke? The United Nations. ZING!

But seriously OP. The UN has never done anything good, and it was formed with the intention of socializing the world. I applaud your representative for recognizing bad things from good things. Something it seems that almost no politician can do these days.

For those looking to vent, get proper advice, or give it to those in need.

Larry Miller is a -blam!- joke and an idiot. The guy holds no sway and little respect in the Conservative party. Now if Stephen Harper, Peter Mackay, or John Baird suggested this? Now that'd be news.

So the U.S. leaves and Chinese and Russian international influence skyrockets? Think before being a Larry Miller.

Implying their influence doesn't already stall and nullify the entire point of the UN.

That's the point of the veto. The UN veto, which believe me I've criticized, gives huge influence to the US and really does curb Russian and Chinese interests. Sure we can fantasize about how the UN ought to be. But the world isn't how it ought to be. So the US forfeiting their UN veto is pretty stupid.

This is why Stephen Harper is the prime minister and Larry Miller won't amount to much in Canadian politics. The consequences of what they're proposing doesn't really click.

So yes the UN could and should be reformed. But forfeiting that kind of international power to other state actors is dumb.

Yes, that's the reality of the situation. But the UN is by far the single most idiotic organization ever created. It was started with the best of intentions and now all it has amounted to is a complete stalemate of lame-duck politics and wasted money.

Seriously, the US contributes 22% of the budget to an organization comprised of 192 nations!

22% of 192 nations is an absolute joke. And even more if you want to factor in military costs in UN peacekeeping missions such as Somalia and believe it or not, Iraq. All at the same time France, Russia, and China all play the game of, "Which dictator gives us the cheapest oil?" and cast their votes accordingly.

There's a few things here. One is the complaint that the US pays so much. You're taking a single number and going "we'll the US pays for a fifth of the UN this is so unfair" rather than really thinking about it. Why does the US pay the most? Because it remains by far the biggest economic power in the world. What is that actual number amount to and what is it as a percentage of GDP? Then compare that to other nations. Always scale numbers rather than taking them at face value.

As for the UN there are two ways of looking at it. There's the idealistic view, which there's nothing wrong with, and the one that involves reality. The reality is, like we've discussed, forfeiting that kind of power to other actors is pretty dumb. Especially for the Americans who have abused the veto for some very morally questionable things. Let's not pretend the other four members are playing dirty and the US isn't. The US is the dirtiest so they're really not quitting the UN.

I'm not arguing against you my post agreed with you. I'm saying that by being in the UN the US gets NOTHING in return. Yes, the US is the worlds largest economic power and should obviously contribute more than, say, Uganda. But what's the return on our investment?

It's an organization that if we're not in, Russia and China get the say in the world. But if we are in, well, nothing at all happens.

The return on the investment is ridiculous power. Among the P5 today the US has used the veto power by far the most. Technically for the US to leave would mean more would happen since the worst veto offender is gone.

Forget the moral nonsense for a minute and channel your inner Machiavelli. Exiting the UN because you think nothing happens, which taken literally isn't true but I understand you're trying to say it's either too slow to act or too late, is ridiculous when you're playing politics. Politics aren't going away. People like Larry Miller don't understand this and that's why they're at the bottom rung of their party hierarchy.

You aren't understanding I agree with you. I was saying they should leave because, really, the UN fails at its job and if anything makes it even more difficult to go about peacekeeping and solving world issues.
