"Before you insult someone, try walking a mile in their shoes. This way, when you insult them, you are a mile away and have their shoes."

Take a moment to remember the extermination of the native Americans...

Japan had very few choices left.

"Japan was at war with China. Despite being a military superpower, their war with China was using up their resources. During that time, most of their resources especially oil were coming from the US. The US did not approve of Japanese aggression in China and they declared an embargo on Japan. This means they would stop supplying Japan with raw materials. So where would Japan get their resources to continue the war now?

The Japanese High Command carefully discussed this and came up with the conclusion that the Dutch East Indies would be the best place to gain resources. But they knew that an attack on the Dutch East Indies would probably bring the US into the war. So they had to find a way to prevent the US from fighting with them until they conquered the Dutch East Indies. That's when they planned Pearl Harbor. The goal of Pearl Harbor was to disable the American fleet for a few months to give them enough time to conquer the Dutch East Indies and to absorb its resources to finance their war in China and the US once the US' navy was rebuilt."

Pearl Harbor should have been forgiven (and forgotten) a long time ago, Hiroshima and Nagasaki should eventually be forgiven, but never forgotten.

They tried to surrender but because it wasn't unconditional you refused and dropped the bombs.

All right all you buttmad people about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Was it a better option to invade Japan and lose millions of US soldiers and turn Japan into a wasteland? The Japanese soldiers were going to fight to the death and the civilians were absolutely terrified of the US soldiers because of propaganda spread by the Japanese government and often committed suicide instead of being captured. They were also trained by the Japanese to fight the US in guerrilla actions. If we had invaded Japan it wouldn't have been war it would have been genocide.

Also Hiroshima and Nagasaki have been rebuilt and are prosperous cities not irradiated craters.

you people act as if war is a thing of the past and you contemplate it only on the dates when they occurred. War happens every single second.

True enough, pearl harbor was a significant event in history but there is always conflict and there will always be conflict, be mindful of it always, not only at certain times.

I figured I'd join in on the fun anyways. Quick question though: Has anyone cited Barefoot Gen as a source yet? (lol)

after the war the USA was running the joint, it isn't surprising that they would have ensured a strong alliance.

Why do you people get so offended by the atomic bombings that killed ~300,000 people, but not the fire bombings that killed millions in one night? You claim to care about human lives but apparently don't care about the millions who were burned to death or died from asphyxiation.

I'm sure people would get offended about the fire bombings too. But the Atomic bombings are always hyped up more in media.

They're trying to be edgy contrarians, telling us how we shouldn't think about an event that happened because worse events have also happened.

In simpler terms most people have no idea what happened other than what they learned in school, which is basically nothing.

Racism isn't wrong if it's funny.

How interesting that Japan would receive a 7.3 earthquake on the same day?

Coincidence? I blame the government!

I respect the sacrifice of our armed forces, but I don't respect the cause they fight for nowadays.

Besides Japan would never have gotten nuked if it had not become militaristic and invaded China, Burma, Guam, The Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Manchuria, Formosa, and US territories in the Pacific (And many more than I said). They started the war America did not want and we finished it. That's just war. I will always believe that dropping the bombs was an infinitely better option than an invasion of Japan. Japan was ready to fight to the bitter end and then keep fighting and an all out invasion would have been nothing short of genocide of the Japanese people. War is hell and none of the options were a good one but dropping the bombs saved more lives than it claimed. It has also lead to Japan being a very peaceful country as well as Japan not having any nuclear weapons and no interest in making them. Hiroshima and Nagasaki have been rebuilt and are now prosperous cities, they are not irradiated craters like some people seem to think they are. And Barefoot Gen is not by any stretch of the imagination a credible source in this debate.

My views in a lump.
