Yeah, I feel you're right. I mean, the only game I've played recently with that: "using your acquired skills and knowledge to defeat a boss" style is The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
But most of the games, i.e. CoD and even Halo don't do things like that. I think it's because everyone is creating first persons shooters nowadays because they're successful. Kids don't want a challenge, they just want something fast, easy, and fun.
In other words, its instant vs. delayed gratification. The game industry is providing for instant satisfaction with games like CoD where all you do is get online and shoot stuff. It's quick simple and fun.
I mean it's a shame, but those are the games that make money these days. I mean some really good IPs are made, but compared to the number of shooters, not enough.
