Eh, they're good, but I'd still argue for the sword.
Spears have a great deal of reach, and great deal of stabbing ability. That's great if you're trying to stab them in the head. However, it's also really easy to miss with a spear while stabbing. Then, you have to reset and try again until you get it right. Also, stabbing tends to be against one opponent at a time, which is of little use if you get at all surrounded or cornered.
Polearms have a good advantage. Especially things like halberds with their diversity of function. However, with the actual cutting part being smaller compared to the shaft, it's not as effective against larger groups, but still fares better than a spear.
I'd argue that a greatsword is one of the best weapons. It may not have as much reach, but the cutting edge is the entire blade, making it great for cutting through hordes. Also, it doesn't take that much skill to use a sword. It's basically a "swing it back and forth until your opponent dies" for beginners. Heck, I'd argue it takes more skill to properly use a spear, since that requires more accuracy (ever try to stab a tiny object with a spear? Not as easy as it sounds). Also takes more skill to use a polearm, since those require some accuracy in making sure that the cutting edge lines up with the target. Not as much as a spear, but still a good deal.
Overall, though, if you're well trained in any of these, they'd be quite effective. However, without sufficient training, I'd say that a greatsword would be the best choice for ease of use with highest amount of destructive power.
