It's the same game every year, it changes even less than CoD.

Bollocks.

While COD manages to stay the same, AC manages to get progressively more boring.

Also goes to show how you can't trust CG trailers anymore.

I don't know what you're talking about. It was the biggest change in the series.

As someone who has not played an Assassin's Creed game and is curious about the series, I have a question about that. Do you mean that the gameplay doesn't change and gets stale, or that the earlier the title the more fun it is?

I don't know what Ubisoft claimed, but I thought Assassin's Creed III was a very fun game. I got bored in Assassin's Creed II, but I didn't have that issue in the new one. Yes, there was some game breaking bugs, but those were fixed quickly. I also thought the story was more interesting; not so much Desmond's, but the overall assassin story.

Exactly why he doesn't like it. According to this forum, change is bad.

There's no way to get back experiences you missed.
So start right now today and risk furiousness for bliss.

I was looking forward to it, and even had the chance to get it for $30 on Black Friday. However, after reading all the reviews that said it was a giant let down I chose not to get it. Maybe I'll pick it up when I can get a used copy for under $20 but other than that I don't think I'll buy it.

Quite the contrary... the problem with this one is that they changed it too much. It's a new engine (well, a drastically altered, rebuilt version of the old one). Because of this, it is not nearly as polished as the final chapter of a trilogy should be. The endless bugs create endless headaches and ruin the game.

The map design, while true to the era and locale, does not lend itself to the type of navigation AssCreed is known for. When playing, I found myself running on the ground rather than rooftops/trees 80-90% of the time.

The new menu system is ridiculous. Swapping weapons has never been more clunky. What the hell were they thinking there?! They finally found a good method (the weapon wheels of BroHo) then they scrap it entirely for THIS?!

The new game elements (homestead expansion, trading, games, new clubs, etc) are never explained. You are just meant to figure them out on your own, I guess. The assassins recruits in this game are nearly useless, as well.

Ubi really dropped the ball on this one and ruined what could have been a great end to the story line.

Yes

The gameplay changes are almost not even visible.

The biggest change in the series was probably Brotherhood adding the Assassin's Guild metagame.

It was okay, but nowhere near the scale of ACII. Something about that game just made it an instant classic. The music, the look, the setting, etc. All of it just gave the game this eerie, lonely feeling. That odd feeling, though, is what made the game. I know it sounds weird, but I can't explain it any better than that. The game just felt and played right. Not to mention Ezio was a great character and had a great story. Connor is just downright boring and his story was uninteresting.

The core gameplay gets mucky beyond belief, basically:

AC1: pure assassination focus, you work to find info on your target then use that info to do take your target down, it's a bit repetitive but pretty fun

AC2: major improvement in every way imaginable, new characters, better story, smoother gameplay, overall just amazing.

ACB: slight improvements, this is where the series turns into a yearly action game release, less about assassinating and more about FIGHTAN

ACR: I don't even know what's going on, the story's a mess and it's going intyo full blown cod style set pieces

AC3: Oh god who thought this was a good idea?

So basically, just play the first two.

Unless its COD. Then it needs more change. But everything else needs to stay the same.
