I was told this thread is for the Community forum by a ninja, so I'm reposting.

Why does this forum allow certain offensive stereotypes?

Everyday, there are countless threads bashing Europe, and primarily America. These insults are usually degrading, hurtful, unintelligent, and just plain socially incorrect. But, is anything done? Nope, these threads aren't against the rules for some reason.

However, one thread is made insulting maybe the Middle East, or Africa? Instant ban, thread locked.

People are allowed to generalize and call Americans fat, idiotic, retarded, redneck, trigger-happy, yet nobody cares.

If anyone said someone from the Middle East is automatically a terrorist, instant ban.

Discuss why some insulting stereotypes are allowed, but others aren't?

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Posts negatively stereotyping any nationality, race, age, gender, orientation, or religion are routinely locked and their creators are usually banned.

If you see posts like the ones you described in the OP that you claim are never prohibited, feel free to report them. I assure you that they are.

If you find something offensive you can either hit the report button or talk to a ninja via PM about the post.

They are against the rules. If you think a certain thread violates the rules report it or bring it to the attention of the mods, that's all you can do.

  • 12.07.2012 5:23 PM PDT

Just ignore them or report them simple.

This is what I depend on to tell me whether a sufficient number of my fellow members consider something to be "worth looking into".

I will immediately lock (and warn/ban) anything that I see (when I am on the forums) where I have an immediate reaction of "awww hell no!", but other than those, I let the Vox Populi speak. If enough members consider a topic to be a problem, then I am going to look into it and if I see their point, I will act accordingly.

But if something has a subject line that doesn't give me an immediate "no way this will go well", I can wait and see if it ever ends up in the queue. If it doesn't, then clearly our fellow members didn't consider it to be all that bad.

Yeah, you're probably just noticing bad threads that somehow escaped the moderator's eyes. Despite what True Underdog may say, the moderator's aren't perfect, and it definitely doesn't mean that those threads are allowed.

As a good rule of thumb; Just report everything that offends you, ignore it once you have, and then let the moderators sort through it.

Join the Halo Haven group!

Immediately thought of this after reading the OP

But seriously, I do agree, the amount of AMERICA VS X threads (More so on the flood) is pretty bad, and yes, 9/10 it is pretty racist, well, more stereotypical than racist, but it always involves one country getting bashed, usually America.

They should really be against the rules, they never end well.

Is it because those sort of threads can get replies from that targeted group?

  • 12.09.2012 8:15 AM PDT

Key

Most stereotypes against Americans are done sarcastically because we usually don't really care. It's like calling a white person a "cracker". It's not offensive. There has never been one situation in which I have felt offended by any use of the word "cracker" or the stereotype that Americans are fat and dumb. When you call people who have very little power names, (I.E. when white people started using the n-word towards black slaves) it is much more effective than the next-to-ineffective strategy of calling people who have more power than you name (I.E. black people retorting with "cracker").

Most people, I think, have realized this and so most stereotypes and name-calling done towards Americans is done light-heartedly, sarcastically, or, otherwise, very ineffectively while insults towards less powerful places which are more often than not stereotyped and racially profiled (Middle Easterns, Asians, Africans, etc.) is often done maliciously and is thus dealt with more severely.

Bungie doesn't like French on their site.

People are allowed to generalize and call Americans fat, idiotic, retarded, redneck, trigger-happy, yet nobody cares. It's the internet. So I don't take insults seriously. That's why I don't care.

Dude, that kind of thing happens everywhere all the time over the world. How are a bunch of 30 members supposed to deal with it all when (it seems that) no one uses the report button?!

Problem?

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

Without a doubt. I work at a donation/thrift store in Detroit and I have to deal with this crap all of the time though.
