I think the halo 1 pistol was hugely overpowered.
There was a guy on these boards today saying he though the old plasma rifle was to powerfull. I've seen threads saying the battle rifle is to powerfull. How bout the shotgun? The rocket launcher? Ever seen anyone say the noob combo was to powerfull? seems some people think the weapons are just to powerfull....yet, when the game starts the first thing they do is run to the super weapon and gladly drop the piece of junk they have in exchange. People seem to want balance, yet only want a couple of powerfull weapons on the map and have the rest be almost useless. Pretty soon they'll have to give us pillows and have us beat each other with those. First person to die of a heart attack loses.
Just look at the pistol today. When was the last time you traded a weapon, ANY weapon for a single pistol? I wouldn't even trade an SMG (the human needler) for a pistol.
The pistol wan't the super weapon people make it out to be. In smaller maps the rocket, shotgun and even the assualt rifle if used by someone good at melee trumped the pistol. At long range the sniper trumped the pistol. Probably 95% of people that played Halo CE played with "pro" setting, meaning everyone got a pistol at the begining of the game. That is balance. Right now the most balanced playlist is Team Snipers. Everyone starts out with an equally powerfull weapon, and there are no other weapons on the map. Starting out a game with one of the weakest weapons on the map (SMG) is not balance unless that is the only weapon offered. It then becomes a game of luck starting with first spawn. Who ever spawns nearest to the power weapons has a HUGE advantage. That IS NOT balance. Just as the battle rifle brings balance to Halo 2, the pistol brought balance to Halo 1. But, maybe balance isn't what you all want. Maybe you just want to be the only one to have the power weapon and hope no one else ever gets it. But, that kind of thinking just doesn't work for an online first person shooter.
