Because jaythenerdkid is a total loser for reals, man.

(Actually, the reason most people reported it is probably because they're lonely and jealous of someone announcing that they're in a stable relationship, so want to tell them to go away)
People report jay for no real reason at all...
Refer to my post above as to why I reported the thread.

Earlier this year I posted a thread about having a kid. While the topic of the thread was about ashlyns birth, the motives behind it were the amount of support I found through this website on the journey to her life beginning. I'd say that was the most bloggy post I've ever done, but there was actually something to it other than myself.

Jays threads, or at least the ones i've seen:

"Ask me a question and i'll reply with a video"
"Ask me a question about the community and i'll reply with a video"
"Something about people being mean because people call me out on my self-centered threads"
"I've been in a relationship for 18 months"

I know, right?
Jay acts like she's better than everyone else simply because she's a chick.
I hope she chokes to death.

That thread is calling out an individual member from the forums. There's actually a rule on calling people out or making threads about individuals.

As someone who's been the subject of several threads, I stand by as an avid supporter of that rule.

Unless it's about Foman's mom.
If I make a thread mentioning myself, am I breaking the rules by calling myself out? :P

Posted by: dmg04Ehh, I read it. I agree as far as I wouldn't post my own personal life matters on the forums unless I had a proper link-in reason (like a Bnet Birthday thread), or I was genuinely asking for help on a matter.

To me, announcing things is for Twitter and Facebook. Forums are for discussion. Beyond "Congrats" or "Who?" there's not much for a forum to say to it.

I didn't report it since I figure those sorts of threads will be gone within the evening naturally, and because hey, I like seeing that people are happy. Screw dah polees.

It's just reported because there are members of the community who are 12 years old. I may see a "how long was your longest relationship" thread on the Flood every day.

Some people do not know how to handle other people in a respectful manner. They may use the tools are their disposal to simply become tools, rather than actually contribute. The issue here is people, not rules; that thread had purpose, while some may call it attention-whoring or whatever, all that had to be done was to ignore it.

It seems there are many who lack ability to ignore what bothers them.
Spectacular reply. There's nothing inherently rule breaking about that thread. Its touchy, sure, but since its not actually breaking a rule (IMO) I see no reason to lock it on it face value.

The subsequent replies are another matter. Some people are replying on topic, some are criticizing the OP, some are attacking other users, and some are just going along for the ride. There are some potential rule issues there, but first and foremost its mostly just a problem with people being unable to ignore something they don't like or care about. I will get involved if need be, but they seem to have calmed down, so I think its okay for the moment.

If someone really thought that thread was just attention-whoring and had no discussion value, should they not report it? Should I do that with all rule-breaking threads and posts now? Is that the new norm? Don't report a thread if I think it's rule-breaking if there's a chance someone else might think it's okay? That sounds like terrible advice.

Please point out to me the rule(s) that were broken.
Lack of discussion value.

Part A of that thread: Look at me! I'm super cool because I'm in a relationship! Go me!

Part B of that thread: Post your longest relationship. This is not discussion. This is the same as post your favorite color. You can comment on other people's relationship lengths (colors) but that discussion only goes as far as "Wow that's a long time!" "yup." or "That's not very long at all!" "No, it is not". Also, obvious tacking-on of "discussion" to the end of a blog post should be frowned upon. It generates nothing but -blam!- discussion or barely functioning threads.

A bunch of people posting numbers accompanied by units is not discussion, it's a survey, and a -blam!- one at that.

e: Feel free to not respond. I mean I'm obviously going in with a set opinion but that doesn't mean I can't have a legitimate discussion about it, despite what you might think of me as a participant in a discussion.

BRICK WALL REPORTING

"- Do not use the public forums to run contests, solicit donations, barter or sell items/services, or advertise anything at all (except on-topic posts in the Classifieds forum)."
Obviously advertising their relationship

"- Use common sense. This is a video game developer's website. Keep your posts on-topic and "safe for work". The further you stray the more you'll tempt a ban."
OBVIOUSLY not safe for work.

"- Do not post false information or mislead other forum-goers. Yes, even if it is funny."
Did the OP account for the Leap Year?

"- New threads should encourage a discussion among the community; please be mindful of that when you create threads."
ABSOPOSITIVELUTELY no discussion value!

I don't think you characterized his argument the way he intended. It seems to me that he was criticizing people for reporting it, but not because they thought it was rule breaking. Looks to as though he was saying people can and will use tools as they will, but thought that thread was not breaking any rules. It looks to me like he was saying he's rather people ignored things they did not like. I don't think he was saying it should not be reported.

If so, I agree. Though I will say that I don't think the people reporting it were breaking any rules either. If they thought it was attention-whoring and should not be allowed, I think its perfectly fine for them to report it. I won't punish them for reporting it since they seem to be trying to enforce the rules as they rationally see it, nor will I punish the OP because I don't think they were breaking the rules either.

I don't think anyone would seriously advocate not reporting something that they think is against the rules, just because it annoys them.
