WoW has had a much bigger influence on gaming and pop culture in general and most people who whine about there not being a Half Life 3 have never played any Half Life game and maybe have played one of the two Portals and so think they can be a Valve fanboy now. WoW is a much better quality game with much more bang for your buck, as it were, even with the monthly fee.

I don't know what you're talking about, but the only thing WoW is notable for is creating an influx of terrible attempts to rip it off. The Half-Life series has had an influence on the storytelling aspect of nearly all shooters since it's creation. It was the first and most successful game to offer a completely unobtrusive yet drawing story. Gameplay wasn't halted to tell the story. It's one of the best examples of world-building in a shooter released to date.
There's something about the plotline of "aliens invade, go kill all of them along the most indirect route possible" that just doesn't scream 'drawing'.
The game was fun, I'm just baffled by the praise the plot gets, especially at its lack of an ending.
