WoW has had a much bigger influence on gaming and pop culture in general and most people who whine about there not being a Half Life 3 have never played any Half Life game and maybe have played one of the two Portals and so think they can be a Valve fanboy now. WoW is a much better quality game with much more bang for your buck, as it were, even with the monthly fee.

I don't know what you're talking about, but the only thing WoW is notable for is creating an influx of terrible attempts to rip it off. The Half-Life series has had an influence on the storytelling aspect of nearly all shooters since it's creation. It was the first and most successful game to offer a completely unobtrusive yet drawing story. Gameplay wasn't halted to tell the story. It's one of the best examples of world-building in a shooter released to date.

There's something about the plotline of "aliens invade, go kill all of them along the most indirect route possible" that just doesn't scream 'drawing'.

If that's all you got from it, you should probably go play through the game again.

Honestly, I don't even care if you don't like the story. But you should acknowledge that the way the story was told and how it fit so well with the gameplay was unique, because even today it is.

Played through it several times; that description was obviously abbreviated to emphasize its lack of complexity. Playing it again won't change my impression that it rides solely on the success of the gravity gun.

Has to be a troll. Nobody this stupid could possibly know how to work a computer
Never trolled in my life and I don't intend to start now.

IMO, defining a genre and setting a bar, one which nobody has even come close to surpassing now 8 years later, as high as Blizzard did is such an amazing achievement that to give it to any other game (even if it's an amazing game like Half Life 2) that didn't come anywhere close to setting a sales or fanbase record to the extent of WoW for its respective genre that, again, has not been surpassed is silly, IMO. If you're going to go off of the vague description of "best" you have to take many things into account and how fun you believe the game to be is not all of it.

World of Warcraft has had a bigger impact on the gaming industry, gaming as a sub-culture, pop-culture, and its genre than Half Life 2 has. If you ask an average non-gamer if they know what World of Warcraft is, and then if they know what Half Life 2 is, they will likely know the former before they know the latter. And that kind of transcendence of the sub-culture of gaming into the general public is the kind of thing that makes a game Game of the Decade.

It's like watching a car wreck. You don't want to get arrested, but begin to salivate at the aroma of the burning carcasses.

I bet Valve are only delaying the release of HL3 so that they can win it two decades in a row.

The wily bastards.

I've only ever played the first Half-Life.

Because instant recognition makes a game better and more influential.

Like I said, World of Warcraft hasn't contributed anything more than pop culture references. Conventions in gaming invented by Half-Life can be found in games like Call of Duty and Battlefield even today. (Mostly those in storytelling) Hell, Half-Life has even influenced works outside of the realm of gaming. It was one of the main sources of inspiration for The Mist.

I swear to DRUNK, I'm not GOD!

I'd be more interested in a "game of the decade" that DOESN'T include Half-Life 2. Everybody knows Half-Life 2 is one of if not the best game ever made. I was very unsurprised, but still comforted by its selection as game of the decade.

Outside of that... I think I'd give Game of the Decade to one of these:
- Portal
- StarCraft 2
- Halo 2
- OH MY GOD WHY AM I STILL UP THIS LATE!?

If we're going to talk about how game features in Half Life influenced other games, almost every single MMO these days has a UI that is HIGHLY influenced by WoW. More so than any game mechanics in CoD or Battlfield influenced slightly by HL2.

World of Warcraft's influence on pop culture is limited to a single episode of South Park. Even if it WERE wider than that, a game's supremacy is not determined by its influence on popular culture, but how good of a game it is.

I also mentioned that earlier. You'll notice how very few of these are actually good or popular. The reason that WoW is relevant and successful in the gaming industry is because it was first.

I'm not saying WoW is bad, but when it comes to best game of the decade it isn't nearly as qualified for the position as Half-Life 2. The only other game I would have considered was Shadow of the Colossus, but the influence factor was relatively low.

You clearly have not played PlanetSide 2, which plays NOTHING like WoW aside from the high player count.
Again, I really don't see how you could be so naïve as to suggest that a game's quality is determined by its influence on external things. By that judgement, CoD 4 is a MUCH superior game to WoW.

I've only ever seen bits and pieces of the South Park episode, and most people I know who know what World of Warcraft is have not seen the episode or do not watch South Park. Your point is irrelevant.

World of Warcraft still has at least 10 million people who play the game 8 years later. How's that for longevity?

bungie.net is very minxy

That was the only award i disagreed with I will never understand why poeple love half life so much it is a boring generic shooter the only thing Iliked was the gravity gun but that got old after killing the 10th generic zombie. If you have half life on any poll expect half life fanboys to swarm it because to them it is the best thing ever and Gabe fatass is there god. Besides portal there has not been a good valve game yet but they will keep releasing games and milk a sequel because they know fanboys will buy it.

I know everything, I've just forgotten most of it.

Also, my XBL Gamertag is 'Wenggh', not 'A Stolen Fruit'.

We all know that if we worship Gaben enough he might announce that he's going to release Half Life 3 within this century!

The reason they have not and will NEVER release half life 3 because they know it will not be good enough to live up to the impossible expectations that people put on it. People will expect the greatest game ever created and will get a generic shooter it will be Duke nukum forever all over again.

This right here is a very acceptable (in fact, preferable) alternative to HL2.
