Get the hell off my planet!

I have only played the first Chapter or 2 of the Xbox 360 port of The Orange Box, and it was okay. I got it on Steam earlier this year but have yet to play it.

I know no one will agree with me, but I wish that Jak 3 would have at least been nominated, considering all of the improvements it had over Jak II.

I think that's fair, so long as you count Episodes 1 and 2 as part of HL2.

Game of the decade to me should be a game that defined a decade of gaming (kinda goes without saying). Choosing which game you think was best from the perspective of the game itself, like it was just another GOTY, should be almost impossible considering how many choices you have. GotD needs be more than just a game, but the game that changed everything for the 10 year cycle it's being awarded for.

I haven't played HL2, but from what I've seen or heard, it does not match that description at all. It may be a very good game by all means, but it wasn't GotD material.

"Have you ever truly played it?"

Yes. I didn't like it. I gave it a decent try, but it just didn't interest me enough to even finish it.

And that's awesome. Why? Because it just goes to show that opinions are fantastic and help the gaming industry thrive. Not everyone is going to like every game that releases and varying opinions are what promote change and evolution. I love Half-Life 2 myself, but I respect that you don't.

Though, I think as fans of the industry, we have to sometimes begrudgingly accept and respect a game's impact on the industry. For example, I am NOT a Bioshock fan. I just don't think it is a good game even though I played it all the way through, it never captured me. But, I recognize and accept that its done some cool things for the industry and had some cool elements that certainly made it stand apart (even if I didn't like it). Even though you're not a HL2 fan, perhaps you can recognize why some elements of its design have translated into other titles. And if you still don't like anything it has to offer, thats cool too. Power of an opinion.

I'll give it that. I mean who here has played the fabled Half Life: 2, and not have it put a smile on the face? Gravity guns, eccentric vortigaunts, one-legged versions of Morgan Freeman. What's not to like?

Haha, that is interesting. I'm a massive Bioshock fan.

It's quite cool, because Levine took ideas from Half Life which helped him design Bioshock.

Then again, Bioshock really shook things up with its monumental story. Was Bioshock even on the roster?

Absolutely, I definitely noted a bunch of parallels there. And, I have to admit that Bioshock did some things incredibly well. Their environments were gorgeous and the gunplay, environment interaction, and plasmids were awesome. Couple that with the upgrade system and you nail gameplay.

What killed the game for me was the drab level design. The environments were gorgeous, but each level was a repeat of the last. Meet someone crazy, go on a fetch quest MMO style to collect random scraps, and kill the crazy individual. The fact that the intro immediately made it apparent to me too that Atlas would be the bad guy made the twist feel weird. It was cool, but I already knew he'd be the bad guy so it didn't feel unexpected. The commentary made I love, but it just...didn't resonate with me. And the whole fetch questy attitude felt out of place in a game devoted to story.

But that's just my opinion. I love some things they did and hate others. Just as I hate the driving sections in Half-Life 2, but appreciate what they attempted with them. I just never felt they controlled well. It isn't Halo driving.

Friends before pixels.

HL2, Halo CE, GoW 1, CoD 4 are the best (in that order), in my opinion.

Agreed. I felt that I was often dragged from my goal to do a seemingly random quest, which was just designed to stretch the game to make it seem longer.
The gameplay was pretty flawless. But that's a given, considering they just upgraded the System Shock 2 gameplay which was already great.
I didn't catch on about the whole Atlas thing until he revealed himself during the Andrew Ryan scene.

The story is the real thing that captivated me. I love Andrew Ryan and Fontaine as characters. I feel they had their own personalities and were developed well over the story. A lot of games now-a-days have emotionless characters, or pointless characters added in an attempt to drive the story forward. Bioshock didn't do that. Levine, once again taking ideas from System Shock, used Audio Logs to do that for him. Instead of pointlessly introducing a character, he added an audio log to do that instead.

It took me about 2+ years to finally finish it.

Octavia is best pony.

It probably deserved it. Personally, I prefer Portal 2, but it's impossible to ignore HL2's innovations and influence.

Right before you die, there is always a chance to save yourself, sieze that chance and live to fight another day
The best way to kill someone is to fight them with the same weapons they use and make them know you are better than them, not because of superior weaponry, but because of superior skill.

I didn't think any game on the list deserved it.

Honestly, HL2 is pretty good but /v/ likes to overhype it completely and Reddit and everywhere else decided that's the cool thing to do. I'd prefer a different game although the game is definitely good.

To be honest, I have not heard of or played a game that deserves a title like that. I could go around a say that my favorite game deserves it, but I'm not because I know it doesn't.
