Subject: Was Half-Life 2 really the most important game of the last decade?

"Wake me...when you need me."

Topic.

In my opinion there are two other games that are more influential. Halo: CE and Grand Theft Auto III.

GTA 3 literally changed the landscape of gaming. It created the first truly engaging sand box on a console.

I like Halo more, but GTA 3 was the most important game of the last decade.

Online Gaming's pretty much like a zombie movie. There are a lot of mindless idiots roaming around but you find some survivors on the way.

lolno. IMO Battlefront II was.

But I guess it's all subjective.

Halo CE and GTA III both came out in 2001. The decade covered was 2002-2012.

I'm surprised Halo 2 wasn't up there. It basically defined this decade's multiplayer.

CoD4 was by far the most influential game of the decade. Saying otherwise is fooling yourself.

Also the award was for best game of the decade, not the most "influential".

A competitive players main goal is to win.
A casuals main goal is to have fun regardless of whether that results in a win or loss.
It has nothing to do with individual skill or knowledge, it has to do with the reason you play.

Octavia is best pony.

I'd have to say yes, if only because Sourse is up there with Unreal and Quake III as one of the most important engines in gaming history.

Ah. I thought it was a recap of the 2000-2010 decade for some reason.

TimeSplitters 2 or TimeSplitters: Future Perfect should've got it over that game.

Why does everyone think influential makes a game good?

Sure Half-Life's redundant physics puzzles were different, but the game is boring as hell today. Halo CE didn't really do that much either.

And Body Harvest for the N64 was the first big sandbox console game. It was a sci-fi game made by Rockstar which acted as a template for the later GTA games.

But point is, a game being influential does not make it good. LA Noir has shown us an interesting style of detective gameplay that could become a cool genre, but LA Noir itself is pretty lack-luster. Just because it has something new does not make it a good game.

Yeah, GTA3 and Halo were more important, but they're just outside of the timeframe.

I'm really surprised Resident Evil 4 wasn't included. It basically set the mold for modern third-person shooters as we know them nowadays, and it's also a great game with fantastic level design and pacing that has yet to be rivaled.

I don't think Half-Life 2 was all that important in the long run. Great game and I love it, but it didn't have the impact of something like RE4, WoW, Wii Sports, or Call of Duty 4.

No it didn't. It put Xbox LIVE on the map. If you get down to it, how different was H2's multiplayer than Halo: CE's? character models? The BR? The game that defined this decades was CoD4 and again, saying otherwise simply isn't true.

You can point to almost any multiplayer game post-2007 and you will see a bit of CoD4 in it, even if you don't realize it.

This would have been a better choice. I would say TimeSplitters 2 is the better game, but both are fantastic.

"Men of Rohan! Of Gondor! My brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come, when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends, and break all bonds of fellowship. An hour of wolves, and shattered shields, when the Age of men comes crashing down. But it is not this day, this day, we fight!"

no just no HLII was not Halo CE or cod4
