Subject: What happened to skill gaps in multiplayer games?

"What are we holding on to, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for."

Has anyone else noticed the recent trend of developers lowering the amount of skill required to be successful in games, and narrowing the skill gap? I'm not saying that every multiplayer game needs to be vastly competitive or demanding, but it's frustrating when gameplay is so random that even bad players have a great chance of killing excellent players.

In the 90s, Quake and StarCraft were popular because they had serious skill gaps. Bad players had to either get better or get out. Now, we have games reducing the skill gap to the point where there's almost no difference between good and bad players. A lot of games even cause players of higher ranks to automatically have better weapons! Rather than higher ranks representing higher skills, they represent the guy with the bigger gun! Is anyone else irritated by this?

On a related note, ******'s mom has really nice boobs, and it doesn't take much booze or encouragement to get her to let the puppies out of the pen...if you know what I mean...

LMAO

Because the 'competitive' audience is so small compared to the causal audience, so devs changed the way games work.

People may not like it, but...

The difference in player skill to me seems to be much more apparent in co-operative games, rather than competitive.

To be brief, yes, there are a lot of people irritated by this trend.

This is a fair point, but even then: Some casual players who don't really care about winning might still want to be rewarded for being straight-up better than other players, right? It doesn't have to be competitive for the best player to win.

People need to STFU about this crap. Go play other games then.

I am. I'm playing Quake and StarCraft II, for goodness' sake. That doesn't mean I can't be disappointed that new games I enjoy aren't coming out.

He has a point. Cod 4 was the beginning of games that had no skill gaps. Before that, most shooters were demanding and precise. Now, in just 5 years, look what's happened.

True. Competitive Halo is obsolete, Quake is mostly dead, Counter-Strike is headed that way, CoD is casualized.......shame, really.

What current games (specifically FPSs) have very significant skill gaps?

  • 12.08.2012 12:40 PM PDT

I wish Halo 3 was still in it's prime.

Yep, I think that was the last recent game to have a real skill gap. Even then, it could have had a tad more precision and better map design, but that's trivial. It's an excellent game, and the death of a video game facet.

"You are the last of your kind: bred for combat, built for war. You're the master of any weapon, pilot of any vehicle, and fear no enemy"

As games evolve, games change and add more feature that can effect the way a game works.

My advice? Adapt.

Hey, I play StarCraft II, Quake Live, and DOTA. Can't I be disappointed that a genre has died?

You can, but you can't complain

I have a serious bone to pick with this whole "adapt" thing. Sure, I can either adapt or quit. I decided to quit and move on to other genres. However, I think that people need to express their disappointment, because developers and other people will take notice. If we stay silent, nobody will know anything is wrong. I just want to see gaming be the best it can be. Is that wrong?

Why ever not? So long as it's constructive criticism, it can be beneficial, and moreover, I have every right to express my opinion.

So do I. And to anybody who says Halo 3 didn't take skill, just leave.

Call of Duty, to my knowledge, is the biggest start of games not taking much skill at all.

Except this isn't constructive criticism, it's just you -blam!-ing about the supposed lack of a skill gap in modern games
