Yep, I think that was the last recent game to have a real skill gap. Even then, it could have had a tad more precision and better map design, but that's trivial. It's an excellent game, and the death of a video game facet.

Heh, it's nice to finaly hear that, all this time later.

Why ever not? So long as it's constructive criticism, it can be beneficial, and moreover, I have every right to express my opinion.
Except this isn't constructive criticism, it's just you -blam!-ing about the supposed lack of a skill gap in modern games

Actually, I believe the OP listed what he feels is wrong, why he thinks that, and then checked to see if anyone else agreed with him. Now that people (apparently) have validated his opinion, I'm sure he'll list what he thinks would improve games and correct the issue. If anyone is being unhelpful, it's you.

I wish Halo 3 was still in it's prime.

So do I. And to anybody who says Halo 3 didn't take skill, just leave.

Call of Duty, to my knowledge, is the biggest start of games not taking much skill at all.

With Call of Duty 4, it seemed that there was an excellent chance it become a strong competitive game. Then it completely dropped the ball, and yet, it became an incredibly popular game. That on its own wouldn't be a problem: The trouble is that it's being copied by EVERY GAME EVER MADE,EVER. Even totally independent series like Halo try to copy it!

You don't have to. My point is that you're highly hypocritical, and I'm not sure why you're in this thread if you're not interested in discussing the topic at hand.

OP: I think the best fix would be to get a new IP that's based on demanding competitive multiplayer. If, for example, a new Quake were to release, and sell well, the competitive arena shooter could be revived. That would be exciting. Other devs would take notice.

Call of Duty was the logical evolution of gaming, since it stopped being this childish/underground and frowned upon hobby.

Gaming? Sure. Competitive multiplayer? Not at all. I think that games have matured plenty without Call of Duty's influence. Heavy Rain, Journey, and Shadow of the Colossus are all mature games with excellent stories and characters. I find it unlikely that any of them would be viewed as childish.

Still, I find it benefical for the gaming community that there are now these HUGE triple A titles that so many people play and so many people put so many hours in.

For a game to go big like that, it needed to be as simple as CoD, and I think that's a good thing.

Eh, Halo 3 had a definite skill gap. So about half a decade, but even then I was holding out hope for a good, skill-based multiplayer game.

I have a serious bone to pick with this whole "adapt" thing. Sure, I can either adapt or quit. I decided to quit and move on to other genres. However, I think that people need to express their disappointment, because developers and other people will take notice. If we stay silent, nobody will know anything is wrong. I just want to see gaming be the best it can be. Is that wrong?

It seems more like you want gaming to be what you want it to be, not the best that it can be.

If these are the games that make money, that is what the people want. So the majority don't think anything is wrong, because to them it isn't. This is just an indication that you are not the majority.

Because every multiplayer game is wanting to be COD, which doesn't have a big skill gap to begin with.

Aha, but I think there's a distinction to be made here. Diversity is a good thing. Most of my friends are also competitive gamers, and we all have the same problem: We're a minority. There IS a market for us, it's just smaller than the casual demographic. I think that having diversity, and "something for everyone" IS the best direction for gaming to take. For example, I wouldn't be happy at all if every game became hardcore, competitive multiplayer. That's just as bad as having everything oriented toward more casual play.

It's because the casual majority doesn't want to take the time to get good. They want to pick up the controller and automatically be able to hold their own against the good players.

Gaming is still childish for the most part. When was the last time CoD approached a mature thing. Spec Ops: The Line approached Modern War shooters maturely. No other game has.

gameplay is so random that even bad players have a great chance of killing excellent players.
If they're getting kills then they aren't bad players, and if they're getting killed they aren't good players.

Because the 'competitive' audience is so small compared to the causal audience, so devs changed the way games work.

People may not like it, but...

Yup. It's very simple. And it sucks.

  • 12.08.2012 3:45 PM PDT

Well, I've been economical with the truth.

I'll just continue playing League of Legends, possibly the most competitive video game out at the moment.

That's assuming the majority have a specific taste, when in fact the majority of gamers (casual gamers) are more open to competitive games than you would think. What is the most played game in the world right now? League of Legends, part of what is considered not a noob friendly genre. Why is that?

Not necessarily. If you are walking and a guy spawns and shoots you around a corner while you weren't looking, how is he skilled? How are you less skilled for not knowing who, when, and where a random spawn was going to occur? There is nothing you could do about that situation to stop from dying. Skill isn't involved there, that's chance.

What other games? They are so few and far between. Please name some, because I'd love to have some good new multiplayer games to play where skill is the deciding factor.

I never said they all have a specific taste. I said if that's what people are buying, it must be what they want. That goes for any game.

Not necessarily. Let's take Call of Duty, since it's getting tossed around a lot. Somebody comes around a corner and sees a guy. He wildly sprays with his weapon and hipfires. The other guy aims with his weapon and then fires. Sometimes hipfire wins out, sometimes it doesn't Depends on where the randomly placed shots go.
