oh my god, two user-operated mechanical, bipedal weapons look similar?!

To the Flood, this cannot happen.

To everybody else, they see two vehicles that really can't be altered much more to be operable.

I was just wondering due to the movie's history of originally being a Halo film, and the fact that the director is a giant fan of Halo, and the name "Mantis" which relates to the aliens in the film. No need for both of you to be so sarcastic, this is just fun speculation.

Just remember that no matter how terrible you feel, or how much you want to let go, there are people who care about you and love you.

They do look similar, now that you mention it. I never saw District 9, so it never occurred to me.
Go to your nearest Walmart and search the $5 bin for it.

Or look for it on Netflix or something...

Just watch it, great movie.

I mean, they both have the dick part... WHY ITS A GIANT ROBOT! They dont have dicks.

I think it looks more Metal Gear than D9

Anyone seeing a pattern here?

This guy is right.

Everyone thinks it looks like another mech/bot from another game/movie.

THEY ALL LOOK VERY SIMILAR IN DESIGN!

Picky with mechs? What makes a good mech then because mechs in general are objects of poor design.
By picky, I more or less meant biased...

But I really don't see this breaking in half very quickly.
Hey, that's cheating. An Atlas could just step on a Mantis. It's 20 stories tall!

I've been playing Halo since 2002. My earliest memories include hiding at the shotgun window on Damnation and killing my dad with grenades while playing co-op on Pillar of Autumn.

OP, this isn't some conspiracy. 343 simply didn't put any effort into Halo 4 and ripped all their ideas straight from other sources.

For example, CoD and District 9.

Damn, I love that mech scene at the end of District 9. That was priceless...

Yup, and from Bungie's Halos as well. They literally don't have an idea of their own except maybe the plot line though I don't know cos I haven't played it...

Rain, and Jazz.
Halo: Tactical

I'm either a fool or an inteligent man, depending on how sleepy or angry I am.

I originaly made an account on 07.27.2007 but I wanted to link my GT and made this account. Don't forget your passwords!

It's a walking bipedal Warthog.

Reminds me of Metal Gear if anything.

The Halo 4 mantis looks too skimpy.

  • 12.09.2012 8:56 AM PDT

I change shapes just to hide in this place but im still im still an animal...

Holy crap i hadnt realised it now, now i love the mantis even more :3

Without The Flood, I wouldn't know what an opinion is.

It doesn't particularly resemble the District 9 mech at all. I just looks like a mech.

To add to those who already posted from MGS and Chromehounds, you could say that the Mantis was a reference to any of these games:
MT - From Armored Core
More MT pics
or Robotech
or Mechwarrior (The fact that's its named the "Flea" means the Mantis was referencing it, right?)
or Lost Planet
or Mechassault
or Steel Battalion

Or that the D9 mech resembles the HOLY mech from Phantom Crash
or even Metal Arms
or Lost Planet
or Starcraft

I really don't think it makes sense to draw a direct line between the Mantis and D9. There have been plenty of mechs, plenty of aliens, and plenty of coincidental namings.

I wouldn't say the Mantis draws inspiration from District 9 any more than any other mech precedent.

Sorta like how Bungie ripped off Ringworld with Halo and the Colonial Marines with the UNSC?

I get it though. If Bungie does it it's a homage. If 343i does it, it's a rip off.

if the mantis were more armored and minus the arms it would probably look too much like the flea from mechwarrior

Why Bungie, why would you do this?! - Halo Community

Obviously. 343i is incapable of comprehending their own ideas about mechanics, why should that change for vehicles?

As soon as I read the title I realized how true the comparison is.

Good find OP.

  • 12.09.2012 9:10 AM PDT

It also looks like the Marauder from Starship Troopers...

I did read the OP and there is literally nothing to go on. It is the most cliche design of mechs in sci-fi. Almost all sci-fi with mechs have the Mantis design. Not only that but you can link Halo to many directors and movies and games with mechs. You're all just picking at nothing.

BLZL a few posts up even proves my point.
