Because 343 needed Lasky to seem like a really cool guy and hero so they made Del Rio a cliche contrast of him. Really crappy story telling.Or maybe the other guy got it right. The guy who said that Del Rio is not a leader but a manager and he didn't wanted to do any heroics unlike fabled Captain Keyes.
Which is what Robert, the most diehard Halo 4 fan ever said. Sure you can say that was the character's motive but really all it did was what I said.
Whether or not I am a diehard Halo 4 fan--which I'm not, I have a lot of issues with the game but I don't -blam!- about them constantly, which is what sets me off--doesn't change the accuracy of the answer.
Del Rio had a certain reason for being in the story, but that's the point of side characters. Under your logic, no one ever has a legitimate reason for being in any story if they're a side character. Side characters in general, according to you, are terrible writing. Why was Half-Jaw in Halo 2? To fill in the side kick roll in the Arbiter missions. Also to suddenly become a Fleetmaster, even though he's labled Shipmaster. Why was Johnson in the Halo series at all? Also to fill in the side kick roll. Why was Captain Keys in Halo 1? PoA needed a Captain.
Why was Del Rio in Halo 4? To demonstrate Chief's growth as a human, rather than a machine.
Without side characters, 99% of all stories would be impossible. Writing would become impossible. And that's another thing that annoys me, when a person has an opinion but either can't come up with a valid reason for it, isn't paying attention to what's going on, or is so zealous in their opinion it's obvious they're a fanboy.
People disliking Halo 4 does not piss me off. You can dislike it, I don't fault people for opinions. It's when the reasons behind the opinion are stupid is when I get pissed.
