Subject: Question about Mass Effect 2.[SPOILERS]

I've been wondering how Mass Effect 2 was relevant to the series overall plot at all, to me it really seems like some sort of really long side mission. Lots of the characters don't make a difference in ME3, except Mordin. Shepards whole revival from the dead is hardly relevant ( but then again, that was Cerberus's intent ), and the big surprise at the end, the human reaper they had been working on, isn't even mentioned in ME3.
It just seems to me that ME2 could have been one big DLC because of how easily it looks to me that ME1 could have transitioned to ME3. Does anyone else think this?

What I liked about Mass Effect 2 more then Mass Effect 3 was that you had all the time in the world to complete every mission, something that couldn't be done in Mass Effect 3.

You don't have to put [spoilers] in your title. The game's been out for a few years.

Still wouldn't want to ruin the plot for anyone yet to play it.

Break the windowsill

It was suppose to be finding a way to stop the reapers I guess, though nothing you did helped

Exactly, was ME2 relevant at all the story in ME3?

  • 12.09.2012 8:31 PM PDT

Funny how the Collector base never shows up in ME3 if you saved it

What are these first person words you speak of?

An attempt, even if it is a failed one, is completely relevant.

What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

ME2 was used for a character development story for the series, to get to know more about your crew, before ME3 came out so people would cry for their favorite character but instead ME3 got a different reaction from the fans.

Okay, having seen the drama over ME3, and having only played ME2 I'm getting an awkward vibe about the whole "Reaper" plot. From what I have been able to gather it goes something like:

End of ME1: The Reapers are coming!
Beg of ME2: The Collectors are coming!
End of ME2: The Collectors are gone!
Beg of ME3: The Reapers are here!

Now I could be horribly wrong, can someone explain to me how The Collectors are relevant?

....I'd like to also point out I never finished ME2.

Mass Effect 2 originally had far more relevance to Mass Effect's overarching storyline. It introduced the concept of 'dark energy,' which Drew Karpyshyn's original ending revolved around -- it was a huge part of the Reapers' motivation and existence.

Unfortunately there were shakeups within BioWare, and that ending was scrapped, making ME2 basically irrelevant. A great game - my personal favorite - but irrelevant.

Long story short:

Reapers take civilizations after every cycle.

Collectors were the protheans. Which means we find out exactly wtf happened with those guys. Secondly, the reapers were using the collectors almost like a scouting force, or maybe even a "baby sitting" force, if you want to call it that.

Mreh.

It introduced the Illusive Man who was like the Saren of Mass Effect 3, it also fleshed out some of the Reaper/Prothean backstory. Plus it was the best game of the series.

Not to mention that it set the stage for Mass Effect 3, which is what the second game usually does.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

I see what you are saying, but what is the point of telling any story then? Why not just have the final level as the whole game? The narrative is what's important It exists for it's own sake.

I would have rather them kept expanding on the existing characters from ME1 then introduce a group of new characters, half of whom had such small roles in ME3, the exception being Mordin of course.

As far as teh puma can see... your issues should be with the third game.

Not to sound like a recruiter trying to force you into the bandwagon, but it's not the 2nd game's fault that the 3rd one failed to deliver properly.

Yeah, I wish they kept their original plan....ME2 was awesome because during that time span nothing was really threatening the galaxy.

It was cool to travel to places like Illium and the Citadel where the galaxy was just going about their business. A nice space opera feel.

Not running around the galaxy trying to save everyone's asses. I actually think the reapers should've came in the middle of ME3, so you had time to convince governments of other species' to side with you (provided concrete evidence). Imagine visiting the homeworlds (and not on fire)!

They are working for the Reapers.

But were then completely wiped out in a single game, hardly referenced, if at all, in ME3, making me feel like the whole thing was like an expansion or something.

I thought it was scrapped because it got leaked and a lot of people didn't like it.

Refer to my reply earlier in the thread.

@Rockdale: Maybe. The source I read earlier this year implied that the problem was contention between BioWare vets (like Drew) and EA.

In any case, I have a feeling the dark energy motivation wouldn't have done any worse than the turd BW settled on. It was actually unique, instead of the whole Terminator spiel they went with.
