My family just adopted a puppy from the shelter today, and so far its been an adventure. She is only 4 months old, a black retriever mix, and very shy. I just have a couple of questions for you experienced dog owners?

-Is it normal for her to just lay in the same spot and rest on the first day?
-Should I bathe her in warm or cool water?
-How often should I bather her, because she has that shelter smell and I don't want her stinking up the house.
-Also, she hasn't cried or barked, the shelter said she was very shy, but is this normal on the first night?

Warm water? Should I give her tap water or bottled water? The tap in our area is pretty clean.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I've had lots of experience with adopted dogs. For a dog, being in the shelter is a traumatic experience, and then going into a new home is another one. Every dog handles it differently, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Just give her lots of love and attention and she'll get used to you quickly. You may want to crate her for the first night or two, just to make sure she doesn't destroy anything in the house while you sleep. Also, some dogs (especially shy ones) actually LIKE crates because they feel safe and secure, and she will need that on the first night.

Bathe her in warm water. If she doesn't respond well to the bath, use a nice warm shower instead (you'll obviously have to put on a bathing suit or pair of gym shorts or something and climb in with her).

Take her to a good vet soon, even if the shelter told you she has already seen a vet. Make sure she's in good health. If she is, just give her the time it takes to get used to you and your house/family, and she'll be just fine :-)

Also, I would enroll her in a dog obedience school ASAP. Discipline is just as good for a dog's life as it is for a human's, and well-trained dogs are happier and more pleasant to have around.

Thanks about the crate tip because we hadn't actually planned on the shelter letting us take her home so quickly, today was the first day we ever met her. I'll go out tomorrow and get her a nice crate. I'll also have to take her to the vet because she has worms in her butt, even though the shelter said they had already given her medicine, I still found a couple coming out.

This......

is a stupid response. Honestly if you respond with this; you should probably just not respond. It isn't funny, and you aren't helpful.

She has to get used to it there, wash her once a month, once she gets used to it she should make noise, and I would go with warm water, but try to keep it out of essential areas.

She may be laying around due to the worms or she is sick from something else. When I got my golden retriever a year go she laid around alot. I took her to the vet to find out that she was badily sick. So I would recommend taking her as soon as possible.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

-Is it normal for her to just lay in the same spot and rest on the first day? Puppies need sleep, so I think that is normal.

-Should I bathe her in warm or cool water? Warm, not hot.

-How often should I bather her, because she has that shelter smell and I don't want her stinking up the house. Bathe her probably one a week or month; too much bathing dries their skin out, according to my experience.

-Also, she hasn't cried or barked, the shelter said she was very shy, but is this normal on the first night?I don't know.

Also more advice, potty train the puppy outside IMMEDIATELY. Also, if it is like most big dogs, they will bite instead of lick you playfully though, unless you teach them not to nibble on you when they're young.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

I've worked a couple of rescues around the N Va area, and we handed out flyers that basically said just this.

I was going to type it up, but this sums it perfectly.

Mreh.

1. Yes, new envioronment, some will chose a spot to call their own, others will wander around a bit and then settle down.
2. I bathe my dogs in lukewarm/cool water
3. Once a month
4. Depends on the dog and how young she is.

I heard it was lukewarm water. Also once every two weeks. make sure to use puppy shampoo. Adult shampoo will hurt her skin.
