You place a box weighing 282.6 N on an in-
clined plane that makes a 39.5 angle with the
horizontal.
Compute the component of the gravita-
tional force acting down the inclined plane.
Answer in units of N

Great minds discuss ideas

Average minds discuss events

Small minds discuss people

(F)sin(theta). Just plug in 282.6*sin(39.5) to find your answer.

Draw a picture, draw the force of gravity and the normal force.

OH HAI THAR!

Physics is so easy, all you have to do is plug numbers.

well first you take the square then you take the triangle then you multiply it by the pudding pop and buwahhhhhh

Why'd you change your answer? You had it correct:

282.6N * sin(39.5º) = 179.756N

Yeah,

282.6N * cos(39.5º) = 218.06N

I was going off the formula posted above.

It's sine, but that's why you draw the picture :V

down the incline = 282.6*sin(39.5)
normal to the incline = 282.6*cos(39.5)

if you can't remember the rules for sin and cosine then do a logic check. What if the angle was 0 degrees? Then it is obvious that sine goes with the horizontal as there should be no force and cosine goes with vertical as it is the weight of the box.

Also, my physics teacher always said "it's a sin to fall down" as a way to remember it.

I think I understand the issue

Force of gravity pushing block to the side = 282.6sin(39.5) - X direction
Normal Force of the block on the ramp = 282.6cos(39.5) - Y direction

I didn't read the problem correctly, thought it was looking for Normal force.
