Hey I need to solve the problem linked. I need to solve for Y. 5.5 is the first angle, angle 2 is 35. First length is 5 mi. And I need to find the other length and the height of the triangle. Any help. ?

The Universe demands to be noticed, to be seen, and dutifully noted.

What use all those incredible firework dimensions if no eye fixes and reflects, no brain takes notes, no heart moves with passion at the display?

NASA answers the silent cry of the Cosmos for recognition.

NASA is the witness and we fellow witnesses to the endless deeps.

Use supplementary angles to find to angle that is the supplement to the angle 2, and use 180 - (angle 1 + angle 2) to find the third angle in the leftmost triangle.

Then use the sine rule to compute the length of the hypotenuse of the rightmost triangle, it should be ok from there.

"A lesson without pain is meaningless, for you cannot gain something without sacrificing something else in return, but once you have overcome it and made it your own...you will gain an irreplaceable, fullmetal heart."

You have terrible handwriting.

OT: I'd help, but I don't know trig.

I tried to write while on my iPod, using an app. It's really hard to write. I still have bad handwriting anyways though. It's all good. The guy above answered my question. Mods may now lock if they deem it necessary.

Ah, the internet. Where men are men, women are men, and children are the FBI.

x*tan(35) = y
(5+x)*tan(55) = y
( both of these given from the triangle)

set the two equal to each other
(5+x)tan55 = xtan35
xtan55 - xtan35 = -5tan55
x = (-5tan55)/(tan55 - tan35)

assuming you can plug into a calculator, do so.

once you get x, plug back into the first equation.
(-5tan55)/(tan55 - tan35)tan35 = y

there you go.

EDIT: All this is assuming this is a right triangle. Didnt read the problem all too well.
