RIP Logan ~B.B.

You are graduated, don't want a job, never had a job, and don't want to go to school. I think I just solved the mystery of why your father is cracking down on you.

You get money for just applying? Is this in America? Man, that would be awesome. I'm in bad shape so I can't work so any money would be nice right now.

LOL, not in America.

In America, you need to have worked a job for several months and been laid off (not fired) to qualify for unemployment, which is the closest thing we have to this Australian program.

Oh that sucks. Well I've done back surgery, in a back brace, recently had multiple seizures and might need more surgery. Think I could apply for disability until I'm good enough to work again?

You said your dad thinks your writing is poor, but you haven't given any indication that it is otherwise. Have you received any recognition from anyone/anything else for your writing abilities?

Writing novels is a difficult profession to get into, and it's not very lucrative, if that's what you want. If you aren't already actively getting things published/reviewed, then you probably won't be able to make a career out of writing.
I put my stuff on writing websites and on the private group here, as well as handing it out to friends and family. My exposure isn't really high (the amount of people who've read the stuff is probably less than a hundred) but so far I've not had any negative feedback at all. From my English teacher to an editor of a sci-fi mag in Ireland I've been told that I have real potential as a writer. Going on that and the fact that writing is pretty much my single passion in life, I really want to focus as much energy as possible on writing and getting my book done.

Just get a part time job. I've had all sorts of jobs to see me by while I work on artsy stuff. And once you get out there, it's worth it in terms of life experience. If you really want to write a good book, you need that life experience.

Your first couple of jobs might be relatively crap (relative to finding work in a first world country lol) but once you've flipped some burgers and washed some dishes you'll have references and experience. Good grades from school help as well. Then you get a better job.

I would recommend you go straight to Uni though.

Probably, worth a shot applying for social security disability.

As stated, I need reasonable proof that I am actively searching for employment or they will incur penalties.

I don't want to be forced into things I don't want. I've already had enough of that through school.

As far as the editors and stuff goes, I don't really have much yet, and most publishers don't really take chances with kids just out of high school. I figured if I went through the effort of writing the whole thing they'd see that I'm serious about it.

Listen, Garshne, I'm in kind of the same boat. I've been working on a sci-fi novel for about a month, after a year of outlining. However, I'm working in the meantime. It's really not unreasonable for your dad to want the same thing. It's not fun, but it's life. Find a part-time job, maybe - that's a good compromise, and allows more time to write.
That was my plan, to find an okay part time job. My dad wants me to get into full time employment ASAP, and won't listen to my plans. Like I said, I'd much rather spend as much time and energy possible working on my book.

And in the meantime, you expect your parents to continue giving you a place to stay, paying for your food, paying for the clothing on your back, and everything else you need to sustain yourself, even though you are an adult and it is a reasonable expectation for you take on just a smidgeon of responsibility.

Gotcha.

And how is applying for jobs not reasonable proof that you're actively searching for jobs? I know how to read, but you didn't answer my question.

As Social Security is a federal program, I imagine it is federally controlled and the rules are fairly linear. Medicaid has some control given to states - you should also apply for that if you haven't so you have access to medical care - since presumably you are considered in poverty as you have no job.

There is a certain point of tolerance that should never be reached.

You're not getting any pity from me. Back in 2009, a 17-year-old me walked down the Volunteer Parkway without food or water, going store to store asking if anybody was hiring. I slept under a bridge that night, after spending 14 hours looking for a job, and not a damn thing.

So, just do some research online, find out who's hiring, and ask them.

Gotta start small, dude. Try getting short stories published before putting all your time into this book.

Like, ACTUALLY published. Not just posted on a website.

While I do all the housework that my dad can't do because he's too old now despite me having the upper body strength of a ten year old girl?

I want to stand up to my dad for once in my -blam!- life and do things my way for once in my -blam!- life. I'm tired of being a depressed, lonely, low self-esteem little -blam!- who everyone bosses around all the time.

I want to get a part time job, and I want to live alone eventually and I want to not be a kissless virgin and I want to write a book and entertain people; and I want to do this on my own terms instead of someone else's.

This thread is pretty much me working up the courage to do all this.

No, you have to qualify for unemployment first. Which means you had a legit job for a certain period of time or made at least a certain amount of money. If you were fired, you more than likely will not qualify for unemployment, unless you make a case against it.

If you do qualify for unemployment, pay is based on what you earned while you were working.

While daddy continues to pay for your every want and need. I hate to be blunt about it, but you sound incredibly selfish. If writing is important to you, start working on a degree in literature. Publishers will sure take you more seriously, and it would improve your writing. But, your father is absolutely right. You are an adult now and need to work towards some sort of self-reliance. Your dad won't be able to pay the bills forever, and it is plain old disrespectful to refuse to help him now that you are able.

  • 12.10.2012 9:45 AM PDT

There is a certain point of tolerance that should never be reached.

You're an adult living for free. You don't have to worry about food, or bills, any of the 20-odd things that most adults have to worry about at any given time.

I was a very lazy kid, but -blam!- happened, and I quickly grew up. Take advantage of your situation. Get a job, save some money instead of having to spend your last dime on some gas so you can hopefully make it to work.

Seriously, in a few years from now, you're going to look back at this and realize how much of an advantage you have.

Dad: A roof over your head, food, electricity, gas, water, internet connection, etc.

It is obvious to everyone else who is coming out ahead in this deal.
