Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

If you find it difficult to talk about death, or if you're inclined to making rude/offensive jokes about it, kindly see your way out of this thread.

An interesting article I saw from a couple days ago if you want to read further.

TL;DR summary of the article: currently, 30 million Facebook accounts are connected to users who have died. This number is expected to increase by at least 3 million per year. This makes Facebook the world's largest online "memorial" site.

As we get older, more and more of our Facebook friends will die, and that will create an interesting dilemma as to how we deal with it. Sometimes, a family member will delete the Facebook page, but my experience has been that most of the time, they don't. What do you do in this situation? Do you keep them on as friends forever? Wait a respectful time and then delete them? Do you post a goodbye message on their wall? Do you delete them immediately?

I have 3 Facebook friends who are now dead. With each of them, I posted a respectful goodbye message on their wall and I intend to keep them as friends forever (or as long as their accounts last). Occasionally, when something reminds me of them, I'll go back and post a short quip or "thinking of you" message on their wall.

Your thoughts?

"Right now it is raining methane on Titan. The planet Uranus is, hilariously, orbiting the sun sideways while Venus spins backwards. We sit here on a planet marked with collisions, rocked by earthquakes, shaken by storms. A planet doomed to be fried in radiation as its magnetic fields collapse, until the sun grows and leaves nothing of the earth but dust. Here we sit, glasses on our noses, inhalers in our pockets, braces on our teeth, and we say "Behold the perfect ORDER of it all!""

One does not choose a destiny, his destiny is bestowed, shaped and formed, from the soul.

Two good friends of mine died in a car crash. I didn't post anything, but met the family personally to express how I felt. Rather have personal than not

I would do this if I were good friends with them. Otherwise I think I would remain "friends" with them but I wouldn't post on their account.

I've only had one friend who was murdered that the family deleted the account shortly after.

Congratulations. You're literate!

I haven't had any Facebook friends die yet, only friends of friends. In any case I just leave a goodbye message on the person's wall.

Im not sure since i've never had a Facebook friend die before, but if I had one that did die, i'd probably do the same thing you did. Post a goodbye message and keep them as friends forever.

"You get what you put into it."

When Legendary is too mainstream, you have Heroic. When you're the leader of the church of MLGeezus, have Epic in your username, and can't write 'About Me's' to save your life, what do you get?

This guy. And now, an side note: Most things I post contain lethal doses of sarcasm, so be warned, and try not to take me seriously.

Finally, a message to Bungie trolls everywhere.

I stopped using Facebook about 2-3 years ago, but if a friend of mine died, I suppose I'd leave them as a friend along with some respectful farewell message on that person's wall.

we're all dying. it's only a matter of time.

i think this is stupid. the easiest way to let go is to forget. why would i want to be connected to dead people.

isn't facebook supposed to be a social network? not an expert, but i don't think dead people are all that social. i don't know though, who am i?

why on earth would we turn facebook into a, 'i'm depressed and need to mourn' site?

While I have no "dead" friends on Facebook I think if it would happen I'd keep them added to go back to his/her profile every now and then to refresh my memories of the person.

How do I know if they are dead if they are random facebook friends?
If I were to know however I would pay my respects to him/her.

Edit:If I were to know them well I would do the same on their facebook and talk to their family about it/pay respects to them.

Completely agree, and I wasn't trying to say that Facebook is an appropriate alternative to personally meeting with the deceased's friends and family. You're right on that.

I just meant to ask how you normally deal with the online aspect of it.

  • 12.10.2012 12:15 PM PDT

im a dumb, dont take me seriously prease.

facebook is so retarded, how people deal with a friends death on facebook is hnnngggg...I hope this is some kind of joke trying to make us look dumb by luring us into agreeing with you because you're a mod.

I would leave a respectful message on their wall and leave it at that. And if they were a close friend, every year I would leave a message.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

I thought a friend of yours died for a second. Good thing I read the body post.

Anyways, this has yet to happen to me.

It was then that I decided he really is like semen(everywhere) and I gave up on life.

I know in my situation, it isn't a friend but when my mom passed away, her Facebook page became a memorial.

On one hand, I still get notifications saying things like, "You haven't connected recently with (mom's name). Would you like to post something on their wall?" and it literally tears me up sometimes.

On the other hand, it's been 2 years since her passing, and people still post things on her wall such as old pictures or memories. As my daughter grows up, I tag my mom in pictures of her and its just really nice to be able to continue updating people, who were very close to her, of the life she had to leave behind.

I could never bring myself to delete her profile but I would never judge someone for removing her from their friend's list.

That's an interesting perspective and a really good point; Facebook is supposed to be for lighthearted social networking, not necessarily a memorial to those who have passed away.

Still, I never really find myself all that sad after visiting dead Facebook friends' pages. I think if forgetting about somebody is the easiest way for you to get over the grief, that's probably a good solution, but not necessarily for everybody.

Involving Facebook or any sort of sites to post or talk announce about someones death is plain attention wanting. Call them and talk or meet them. Facebook should not be involved in deaths.

Don't LOL if you aren't L'inOL.

Halo: Reach
Halo 3
Halo ODST

Probably leave a message on their wall, but mostly just cry everytime I look at it.

Pretty much this.

My friend's mother died, so her profile is now set up like a memorial.

Every year, plenty of people post on my dead friend's facebook, usually around the date of his death.

I think some people are comforted by it. For me, it's sometimes nice to look through some old photos of him that I don't have.
