Subject: Dark Souls 2 is going after Skyrim. Sigh. Rant inside.

So I just finished reading Kotaku's story on Dark Souls 2.

Once again, they aren't giving their readers the complete story.

Dark Souls 2 has a new director. a Director that might have ties to Capcom. CRAP. NO. GET YOUR CAPCOM OUT OF MY FROM. -sigh- Anyway, moving on. The new director has this philosophy when commenting on dark souls 2:

*He wants things to be straight forward, less obscure
*Accessibility is a plus
*Wider audience
*They want Dark Souls 2 to be as popular and successful as Skyrim
.

All of those, ALL OF THOSE, are bad things. Bad things they SHOULD NOT DO.

So when I read that Kotaku said THIS..
Despite the fan reaction, the possibility of changes in Dark Souls II could be a useful thought exercise for even the most hardcore fans of the series. Something in Dark Souls II will likely be different from Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. If change has to come, what aspect of the Souls franchise do you think could benefit from a re-think?

I WAS PISSED. Pissed at Kotaku, and their whore of an opinion. Here is what I had to say that, and here is what I have to say to ANYONE that posts in this thread that thinks Dark Souls needs to have these changes:

RANT:
Sigh. Yet another case of Kotaku not giving readers the COMPLETE story.
Let me tell you something, from one Evan to another Evan:

They used the word "accessibility". That is the word that is getting people up in arms. Yeah, the story is tied to that, but it really sounds like they're trying to dumb the game even MORE SO than Dark Souls ALREADY was!

Yeah, Dark Souls was dumbed down post-release. Bosses drop bones and humanities like fireflies, they added even more bonfire warping so you never have to walk. It's like the Nexus without the nexus. There's a bonfire wherever you go. The only threatening place in the entire game is New Londo Ruins BECAUSE of its lack of a bonfire.

Yeah, there were a ton of secrets, such as the darkwraith covenant, dragon covenant, and such. The new director doesn't want these to be "obscure". The game will be more "straight forward".

So they want to go after "Skyrim": What the hell? We play Dark Souls because its Dark Souls, and in my opinion, it's even better than Skyrim. To match Skyrim, you'd have to dumb the game down so its worse than it already is. You'd have to strip the soul out of Dark Souls (lol). I like Dark Souls for its dark, mature plot. Skyrim just...wasn't any of those thinsg for me.

Oh and the new director might have relations to Capcom? Oh great, I always wanted on-disc DLC and DLC up the whazoo in my dark souls. No thank you.

All in all, bad news is surrounding dark souls 2 everywhere. And it's probably all Namco Bandai's fault wanting more cash in their wallets. We have reason to be concerned. And no, Kotaku, NOTHING has to change. Dark Souls was ALREADY dumbed down, even more so post release, it doesn't need any more dumbing down.

Disagree. Fromsoft didn't say anything about making it more like skyrim.

"I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights!"

"And i will show you where the iron crosses grow..."

I love when the term "accessible" comes into video games.

Hilarious.

Disagree. Fromsoft didn't say anything about making it more like skyrim.

They DID say they wanted DkS II to have as much sucsess as the Elder Scrolls series, but that doesn't necessarily point to a ripoff, you're right.

Also the Director for DkS once said Skyrim was his favorite game besides DkS, so I don't see anything changing except some larger bosses because of that one dude who worked on Monster Hunter.

Here is a direct quote, A DIRECT QUOTE, from the "new director" of the Dark Souls franchise.

We sympathise if that sort of statement concerns you, but at the same time, we can surely agree that we would all like to see Dark Souls attain as great a presence as The Elder Scrolls. - Edge 249 magazine

This doesn't scream From. This screams manipulation by higher ups that only care about the rentability of the franchise.

Right, and seeing as I personally greatly enjoy the Monster Hunter franchise, I also look forward to his work on Dark Souls II.

Is it a crime suddenly to want the product you produce to be "Successful". If it was no one would bother making anything.

Game design is a balance.

Dark Souls should remain a hardcore game, but giving players the information and tools they need to understand the rules of the world isn't really that bad of thing.

I mean, when I first started playing Dark Souls, I had to go online to look up what all of the stats meant, what all of the Covenants did, and how Blacksmiths work. If you really want to play the game and do well, it's an easy hurdle to clear, but for many gamers, that's the point where they walk away from an otherwise beautiful game, which is a damn shame.

There's nothing wrong with making a game more accessible, so long as it's done in a balance. You'll never want to sacrifice the depth and beauty of the gameplay to accomplish this goal, but if you aren't unconditionally encouraging gamers to invest themselves into your universe then you are doing it wrong.

As I said before, the Director of DS and DkS, Miyazaki, loves Skyrim, but never changed the Souls series into Skyrim. Keep in mind he released this information around the time the DLC was announced.

Dat elitism. It's a video game, you're not part of the elite because you have played it.

Try there's a serious and reasonable lack of faith in a game trying to be a wannabe imitator. No one is going to make a better Skyrim than Skyrim is. If people want to play Skyrim they're going to play Skyrim, not the knockoff. Same goes for Dark Souls.

Because it's unique, because it's the best at what it does, Dark Souls and its de facto predecessor were successful.

Jeez these snotty backlashes to people raising concerns are much worse than any elitism.

  • 12.10.2012 2:59 PM PDT

Yet it's already clear that Miyazaki and the new guy have completely contradictory ideals when it comes to this franchise. This franchises BREATHES Obscurity. It's one of the reasons people love it, and now the corporate meatheads are coming in to dumb everything down to appeal to casuals.

I'm confused as to where anyone indicated it would be similar to Skyrim in any way other than its profits.

  • 12.10.2012 3:01 PM PDT

I have doubts that they'd actually water down the game. Hopefully they don't, as the game world, atmosphere, combat, and lore of the franchise are all exceptionally well done and I'd hate for that to be gone just to appeal to a wider audience.

I honestly can't believe this happens every damn time. Someone says something, people over-analyze it, everyone whines "this isn't staying true to x game series", and everyone else has to deal with -blam!-ing for the next year or so until the game is released.

Agreed.

Part of learning why certain NPC's act the way they do, why certain locations have the appearance they do... every little detail is so important, and they lay it out in such a way that looking for the information is fun. At least in teh puma's opinion.

Besides, if they take out obscurity, EpicNameBro's channel wont be as epic. :[

You didn't even read what I posted.

They BOTH enjoy the Elder Scroll! However, Miyazaki didn't change the Souls series to ft into that group. This is seen by the fact that the DLC didn't add anything radical or alien to DkS besides the Arena (which is a plus).

You're severely overreacting. The most that will change is some more Monster Hunter style bosses, which is great because the Boss AI in DkS is terrible (Stray Demon repeating flying flying attack, Nito spamming AoE maic attack, etc...), and maybe some sort of way to find Multiplayer easier (such as the ability to join a server).

You really need it explicitly stated "we're turning Dark Souls into Skyrim" to believe the writing on the wall? If EA said they're going after the COD audience would you need them to tell you they're going to make a wannabe COD?

Now we haven't seen any Dark Souls II footage. So, to what extent the things floating around are implemented is yet to be seen. What I will say is historically these are not good signs. Wannabe games don't do well critically or commercially. And this kinda rhetoric typically leads to a wannabe game.
