Subject: Why does history remember The Holocaust more than the Gulag?

A conservative estimate of deaths by unnatural causes by the Russian government in The Gulag are around 40 million, other estimates get up to 90 million. Yet history and the world seems to forget and not even acknowledge this horrible event, instead choosing to focus on The Holocaust where 6 million Jews were killed.

Why?

Well I think because there really isn't a significant figure you can blame for The Gulag, but there is one for The Holocaust, Hitler.. so what do you think the reason for this is?

Most people focus on the -blam!- crimes during WW2. Not to mention the Holocaust was a massive discriminative event.

Because we found out everything on the Holocaust, not so with the Gulags.

Stalin killed everyone equally. Hitler was a racist.

I honestly have never heard of the Gulag

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

This. Also, Germany is thought of as a civilized country. The whole of Eastern Europe is pretty much regarded as barbaric by the Western world. You don't expect to hear about atrocities being committed in Germany. You do, however, expect to hear about atrocities being committed in Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Correct?

No you are not. "Gulag" simply refers to the Soviet forced labor/imprisonment system, not Stalin's regime of repression under which millions were killed.

There is no reason to think of "Gulag" in the same context as "holocaust," and therefore the OP could be confusing.

What about Cortes and the Aztecs. The disease they carried wiped out a whole civilization. And there was like 25 million people

Jewish conspiracy.

I guess you could call it that. Russian peasants aren't in control of US banks, so you're not going to hear a lot about the plight of Russians and why they deserve excess wealth.

Also, partially the fact that we were locked in a Cold War with Soviet Russia, so most don't want to think that it was possible the actual people there were being oppressed, and those people would rather think they were all a united enemy against us, since that doesn't challenge people's mindset of how the world exists.

Didn't Stalin kill like 9 million by making them freeze to death in Siberia?

Of course the history taught in the Western European-centric sciety would focus more on the persecution and attempted extinction of a European race, as opposed to Stalin's rather indiscriminate killings en masse.

Imagine if America had lost 27 million people in WW2. I doubt you guys would call it a victory and celebrate that with victory parodies each year.

In my high school we learned about the mass killings led by Hitler, Stalin, and Mao Zedong, discussed some of the Japanese atrocities (like Unit 731), and the internment of Japanese-Americans into prison camps. To name just a few.
