Subject: Why does history remember The Holocaust more than the Gulag?

The Gulag definitely is taught. I learned a decent amount about it in my 10th grade World History class, but yeah, why it isn't well known like the Holocaust makes no sense.

Why are you looking at this?

Because the Soviets were our allies during the later half of the war, so even though we didn't see eye to eye on a lot of terms we knew we needed them to help keep the war in the allies' favor.

I used "we" way too much there.

I see what you mean. I think much of the imbalance has to do with the lack of information. When Stalin started the purges the Iron Curtain had already fallen. So, much of the information as to what was going on was out of date. The Holocaust, on the other hand, was well documented, and had many survivors willing to tell their tale, lest history repeat itself.

The Holocaust has more material about it than other events. Another, for example is the lack of teaching on Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. They killed a quarter of their own population. Yet nearly no one knows about them.

The rapidness of the Holocaust is what surprises people so much, along with the fact that it occurred to white people at the hands of white people from Western and Eastern Europe; the most civilized of all. It just crumbled down a lot of the social structures that the white race had upheld to justify its dominance over other peoples. The gulag was also horrifying, but as someone else mentioned, the Iron Curtain prevented a lot of information from coming into the West, save some dissidents.

You might as well mention the entire colonization of America then.

Pretty sure Stalin could have been blamed. Also, Hitler did not just slaughter Jews, it might not be as significant, but there is another 4 million in others.

I think the worst thing about it is that we celebrate a holiday for the starting of it (Thanksgiving).

Why didn't the Allies do anything about Hitler's killing of the Jews before the numbers got so high?

The world as a whole chose to ignore the Soviet's actions because of the roll they played in World War II. Despite the fact that Stalin murdered more people than Hitler.

Stalin killed everyone equally. Hitler was a racist.

So Stalin was an honest killer?
I think it has more to do with the fact is that you'd go to the Gulag if you were seen as some sort of criminal or enemy of the state but Hitler focused on a single ethnic group.

Gulag isn't taught in school.

This, and the fact that people create more allusion to that of hitler and Stalin

Groups. Don't forget the Gypsies and LGBT.

Stalin went after you if you swore allegiance to anything but him. To survive in the USSR then was easy. Don't do or say anything anti-stalin, nor anything pro-anything-but-stalin.

Then you lived. Under Hitler, no matter what, if you were Jewish, a Gypsy or LGBT, you died.

What if I told Stalin that I put God before him. Would I still be killed?

Maybe cause The Holocaust was more concentrated? I say maybe because (as your observation confirms) I know nothing about The Gulag.

It doesn't.

Didn't you idiots pay attention in high school?

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

The holocaust was systemic, deliberate, extermination of a specific race solely based on a single characteristic person.

Genocide.

That's what is scary about the Holocaust. The fact that we now have the capabilities to exterminate a specific race.

Also consider that, during the cold war, much of what happened in the Gulag was kept secret by the USSR. We didn't know much about it until the 1990's when the Soviet Union collapsed.

Yup.

Because the evils of fascism are presented to us in a very explicit and upfront way but the evils of communism are put in a more subtle and "yeah, this is bad" kind of way.

Why does history remember The Holocaust more than the Gulag?
Am I the only one confused by this sentence?
No you are not. "Gulag" simply refers to the Soviet forced labor/imprisonment system, not Stalin's regime of repression under which millions were killed.

There is no reason to think of "Gulag" in the same context as "holocaust," and therefore the OP could be confusing.
Also, while we're at it, why not remember Mao's Great Leap Forward? Probably killed as much as Stalin's and Hitler's policies combined.

I haven't even heard of 'Gulag' up until now. That should give you a hint about how much we learn about it in school.
