i read the title and thought "this might be interesting" i read who started the thread and knew at once that this thread was probably already locked. i then saw that it was not locked so i gave it a good read, and now i know that that was not only a mistake, but a waste of my time. furthermore, maybe you could sue people for billions of dollars if you spill hot coffee on yourself, or better yet, sue someone because you're a fatass (you in general). that one is sure to work.

P.S:if i hit you with my car, i would drive off before you had a chance to read my plates.

Intersections up where I live are all mounted with cameras.

To sue a person because they hit you with their car at no fault of your own isn't rediculous like the other examples you gave.

Are you sure they are security cameras? There are a ton of "security" cameras on the lights at intersections where I live, but I learned in Drivers ED that they are just sensors that change the light when there are a ton of cars waiting.

God you Americans love to sue each other, jesus, it's just like that woman who died because a tree fell on her car while she was in it. If you sue the guy, they will probably make it illegal to have cars around your school, and also you wouldnt even get that much money, I mean come on they kinda nudge you, you dont even get a bruise for gods sake! It's a shame to see how much Americans sue each other for the stupidest reasons, just tell them to get a crosswalk guard or something.

You should see Miami Drivers as I like to call them.Half are refugees which I have no idea how they got their license. Then there's the old people, but of course they're everywhere.Worst part is that the good drivers get yelled at by others for driving correctly.Man some of these people just make up their own rules of the road, and i think the turn signal doesn't exist to som of them.

That's hardly the point -- the point is - a car is a weapon. If you are driving, you had better god-damn well be paying attention to what you are doing.

Damn right I'll sue -- It's not about the money, it's about the principle. $3000 bucks is the statutory max in most states for a small claims suit. Hardly a huge sum. It's about punitive assessment.

It's far from a stupid reason, and while Obbi is a bit far-fetched with the Rich by the End of the Year topic, he's certainly justified in his rant. The world is full of morons that decide to talk on their cell-phones or blast their music when they should be concentrating on driving.

I think if you are caught not paying attention while driving, you should have a mandatory license suspension. It foolish, and you deserve to get sued and have punitive damages assessed to the fullest extent of the law.

College students have enough loans to worry about without the fact some dirtbag that was slightly nudged by their car because a crosswalk is in a bad position/blindspot. Obbi, did you even look before crossing the road, just because the crosswalk is there, doesnt mean you can just go accross it while cars are coming. Wait for the car to stop for you before going accross. So just because you want money doesnt mean you should sue some guy because you bolted out in front of him while he was turning the corner. I mean if you do sue him, the school will prbably have cars like banned for students or something, you will totally F |_| CK up someones life because of the money that you want, which they dont have because being in college is hard enough as it is, and for what, 3000$? Just because a car bumped your leg. And dont say Americans don't sue alot, every second commercial I see on American T.V stations are lawyers advertising their firms. I mean if you accidentally like had the bumber of your car hit someone in the leg because they werent lookign where they were going, not causing any damage to them, not even a bruise, and them sueing you would make you pissed of right? Well I would be pissed off too, nto to mention the headaches it causes because of lawyers and what not. Just tell the guy to cool it and if its money your after tell him to give you some cash, maybe a few hundred bucks. All you Americans are too greedy for your own good.

Paragraphs.

And again, you miss the point - The dirtbags deserve to be hurt in that way. If they can't pay their loans? Too bad - Sucks to be them - next time try paying attention. Seeing as how you are so gung-ho about this, I suggest you not do any driving either, unless you learn the importance of paying attention while in a motor vehicle.

It's principle - quit trying to make it an American thing -- EVERY driver on the Planet needs to take responsibility for paying attention. That's it - No less. If you can't? Piss off. You don't deserve to be in college, you don't deserve to have a car, and you deserve to WALK your happy ass to the Waffle Hut for $5.35/hr.

For a while now it seems there is a large amount of stupid drivers going to my highschool. Since it's been cooling down I've been walking to and from school, totalling up about an hour and a half each day. It really is a nice walk. Today I got out at the start of lunch. I was at the stop-light near our school, and, like always, when trying to cross the guys turning right from the lane left of me almost hit me.
<...>
I swear, it's rediculous. So many drivers don't see me. I stand out in the -blam!- open. Yet, every time when I'm crossing I'll have someone try to turn into the crosswalk just to see me at the last moment. I'll look to my left and see them cover up their mouth with their hand in surprise.

It's only a matter of time before a member of the "Future for America" hits me.

OK... sounds like you should cross the road somewhere else or pay more attention YOURSELF. Right turns are legal on red lights, and most drivers are looking for CARS, not people sneaking their way onto the road.

As a pedestrian, you have responsiblity too. Since those people making right turns are troublesome to you, what about you PAY ATTENTION to them?

Pedestrians piss me off. I live in a tourist town and people just expect traffic to stop for them. Well, I only stop if they're already in front of me. A lot of people dont pay much attention when they're on crosswalks. They think "oh i'm legally shielded from liability... if someone hits me it's their fault..." It's ridiculous. Most of the -blam!-s won't even walk fast to get out of the way. they just stroll along at a snail's pace while the world stands still for them.

Now, on to the really honest unbiased part...

You're pissed off.
The world doesn't revolve around you.
Get over it.

What a cliche expression, showing your understanding of this situation is... well... nil.

I am, by law, legally able to cross the street when I do. If they can't see me, it's their fault. How am I supposed to "watch out for myself?" Not cross the street? Get their attention by blowing an air horn?

Right turns are legal on red lights,
Right turns are only legal if the way is clear, it is the responsibility of the driver to make sure the way is clear, or did you miss that part in the drivers manual?

and most drivers are looking for CARS, not people sneaking their way onto the road.

Then those drivers are breaking the law, and should have their license revoked. It's hard to sneak across a STREET.

As a pedestrian, you have responsiblity too.

A responsibility to cross at crosswalks with the signal.

Since those people making right turns are troublesome to you, what about you PAY ATTENTION to them? He shouldn't have to - he isn't operating a motor vehicle so the burden doesn't lie with him. Learn how to drive.

Pedestrians piss me off. I live in a tourist town and people just expect traffic to stop for them. I lived in a tourist CITY for about 15 years of my life, driving for 10 of them. I followed the traffic laws and had no problems. Well, I only stop if they're already in front of me. Then you should have your license revoked because you obviously are a horrible driver. A lot of people dont pay much attention when they're on crosswalks. They think "oh i'm legally shielded from liability... if someone hits me it's their fault..." It's ridiculous. It's not ridiculous, it's the law - If you are too stupid to understand that, maybe you should trade your keys in for a bicycle horn Most of the -blam!-s won't even walk fast to get out of the way. they just stroll along at a snail's pace while the world stands still for them. Yes - It's a crosswalk, not a crossrun. You seriously do not need to be behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

Now, on to the really honest unbiased part...

You're pissed off.
The world doesn't revolve around you.
Get over it.

Simmer down ladies. You both make good points, but chris547's point is the one with no real relevance to the topic.

I was hit by a car once. I am totally against the petty things people will sue over, but if I was left consious enough to make out who hit me before he drove away...I would make him suffer.

Apologies Surge -- but I lost my best friend because of a careless driver, and it was a hit and run as well, Peck got me going with that statement.

I still stand behind every one of my statements, but maybe I could have said them better.

First and foremost, turning on a red light, depends on the state/city. Secondly, the crosswalk if it is not as a stop sign MUST HAVE a green walking signal that you cross on, otherwise it becomes the predestrians fault for crossing ON RED.

But since Obbi was near a school, I assume it was a stop sign and totally agree that the guy should have been paying attention.

Er, forgot to mention the fault laws are for the state of California.

It didn't have a green walking signal, since in Arizona they're all white. But yes, I did have a white walking signal.

And they were two girls, both rather silly. It makes for interesting conversation, though - I'll have people come up to me in school and mention how they almost hit me.

It's great contributing in starting the rumors, but then going out and spreading false information so that you have many conflicting stories.

Happened last year when Estey got into a fight with a student.

That's where it gets twitchy, I agree that a pedestrian shouldn't jaywalk on the signal, but regardless of the state you live in, it's driver responsibility. It's the same principle as rear ending someone. By most states traffic laws, you are at fault if you aren't far enough away and paying enough attention to avoid an accident.

So if you are driving and see someone doing that, simply report them. Then and only then are they breaking a bigger law than you. If you hit them, it's automatically your fault, (so far as I've found) in almost, if not every state.

I only check 10 states traffic laws at the time of writing this, and it's exhausting.

At this point, I would prefer anyone who says that these laws don't apply to their state, to post what state they live in so that I can review the laws.
