Cole

Lately, my friend has been pressuring me to get Dark Souls. The game looks really good, but I've had so many other games I've been busy with that I haven't gotten around to trying it. And recently I saw the trailer for Dark Souls II. I feel like I've waited to long to play the first game, so should I hold out and wait for the second game? Does the story require me to play the first game?

Holy -blam!- yes get it. And the story probably won't demand for you to play the first game, but it couldn't hurt. FUNKING PLAY IT OP GOSH DAMMIT

It is very dark, and you are likely to be eaten by a Grue.

Yes. Play Demon's Souls first though... it's just better atmosphere and more difficult. Dark Souls is excellent though.

Play the first game. The story is not essential, but the game itself is beautiful, and should hopefully be good practice for the sequel.

Rent it if you are hesitant, possibly from a friend. Definitely get their help starting out, and have them help you create a plan for your character.

Good luck, and prepare to die.

This as well.

Also don't neglect parrying and dodging.

It's good. But it can be really frustrating if you don't know where to go, and has a learning curve like a cliff face.

I just put it back in the tray today, and took the time to figure things out. Once I got on my way and wasn't killing the same dudes and dying over and over and over it was pretty fun. The game is beautiful and challenging so I would recommend it.

I'm basically in your same boat OP. I planned on getting Dark Souls because it seems awesome and I wasn't expecting anything like it to come out for a long time, but with Dark Souls 2 announced I'm now thinking I should wait.

It is am awesome game OP, with a really dark, oppressive atmosphere.

It also has a steep learning curve, which may put you off. I'm stuck myself, and the game doesn't help you out at all - it very much leaves you to figure out stuff for yourself.

It really was tame compared to Demon's Souls. Where are you stuck?

Darkroot depths(?). 10ft tall Stone Knights things coming to life.

My main problem isn't strategy, as I can kite them into the trees, but the fact doing anything like blocking or dodging removes stamina, which is what gets me killed.

That and the last time I played all 3 came to life at once...
