Subject: What is more important in education?

Why would you expect that on the internet?

Reading comprehension or Critical Thinking.

I see a lack of both on any forum I visit. So, schools must be highlighting neither. Since resources are limited, which should be emphasized more?

Reading comprehension seems more vital, considering you have to understand a person's argument in order to oppose to it, agree, or simply reflect on what was read/heard. I can't really see critical thinking as being something you teach as much as something you encourage others to do more. Not to mention the possible subjectivity of a topic in critical thinking, as opposed to reading comprehension.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

You can't say one is important than the other if you were a teacher you would want your students to be able to read and be able to think critcally.
Yes, I can. And its only a matter of time until this debate actually happens. There is only so much money in education.
It sure is amazing how we manage to teach kids math and English at the same time.
On the budget we give our teachers, it actually is.

Last week I was in Staples getting notepads. I was in line next to a 3rd grade teacher that was buying supplies for her classroom. On her own dime.

I don't know about you, but when I see teachers spending their own money on supplies that should be supplied for them, I worry.

They call me graland.

Someone that's good at critical thinking will probably do well at reading comprehension, too.

Isn't that the way it is sometimes though? Insure the budget doesn't cover all expenses supplies does it?

My honor student can beat up your honor student.

Both are important, yet critical thinking should be emphasized. We need more innovators and critical thinkers in the US and people who can generally think outside the box.

It's supposed to, though. That's the whole point to public education.

Hey, at least you get a tax break for that. Which is sad that the federal government acknowledges it happens, but doesn't do anything to mandate change.

Local school systems would rather poop away money on stupid programs rather than providing classroom staples.

Physics.
Just watched this today. Physics and sciences need to be taught more in grade level schooling. There's a reason we're falling behind China in sciences.

Is money so low that we can't even teach basic reading and writing? What is this?

you're retared for not knowing inside jokes

They actually go hand in hand, at least to me, understanding the issue when reading about it, then applying critical thinking to overcome it.

Wouldn't critical thinking skills develop reading comprehension?

Critical thinking cannot be taught in schools.
That is pretty much the mission statement of a Liberal Arts education, and it does it well, for the most part.
