Subject: Will there ever be a series as big as Harry Potter?

One can argue whether or not Harry Potter was a good book series - I, for one, enjoyed it.

But, Potter is most likely the biggest book franchise in the history of our time. Seven books, eight movies, several different tours across the globe, and portions of a theme park based on one series.

All parts of it have raked in millions, if not billions, of dollars.

So, Flood, do you think there will ever again be a series as big as Harry Potter? In the near future?

Even Potter has apparently beat out LotR. I believe I read a news article previously on it.

Apologies, it was this article.

DH Part 2 apparently beat out the 3rd LotR film, as well as first two.

Pretty sure Harry Potter is more popular than LotR.

And collectively, as series, it's a couple billion higher, as well.

Maybe in the future, but it will certainly be hard to top.

That is also from last August. You have to include DVD sales to that, as well is revenue from the Harry Potter set tour, as well as ticket revenue from Universal related to WWoHP.

Maybe in movie sales, but Lord of the Rings will last much longer than Potter will, I can guarantee you that.

All modern fantasy is based of off Tolkiens work, what has Potter inspired?

Size in general. Books, Movies, Tours, anything that is related to the series and its fans.

Star Wars, now that Disney is revitalizing it.

Unsuccessfully trying to bring science and reason to The Flood...

I'm working on it!

Lol, I can dream anyway. I think J.K got slightly lucky, as it was the first thing to get that big. Anything that comes after will always be compared to HP, and will be nearly impossible to surpass.

One can also argue that all of these modern fantasies, even HP and Tolkien's, are getting their influence from the historic writings from Greece and Rome.

I'm not quite sure - I've never read LotR. All I know is, even if people say they are inspired by Tolkein, it's all dating back to his influence. The ancient writings.

Anwyays, now we're getting off topic.
