Maybe in movie sales, but Lord of the Rings will last much longer than Potter will, I can guarantee you that.

All modern fantasy is based of off Tolkiens work, what has Potter inspired?

One can also argue that all of these modern fantasies, even HP and Tolkien's, are getting their influence from the historic writings from Greece and Rome.

Hmm. While I think they are influenced by Greek and Roman mythology, they seem much more influenced by Celtic, Slavic, and Norse mythology to me.

As an aside, Harry Potter is a massive rip off of Neil Gaiman's The Books of Magic.

Lord of The Rings...

Even Potter has apparently beat out LotR. I believe I read a news article previously on it.

This. I find it hard to imagine Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, etc. without Tolkien somewhere in the mix.

Also, Star Wars.

Almost all from Norse Mythology.

Depends. How are we looking at Star Wars? Movies, Books?

It may be from Norse mythology, but it blew up when people read his books.

Same goes with Star Wars. Lucas created this huge universe, sprawling with unique planets and people, that is still going strong today (see Star Wars 1313 or the upcoming new trilogy).

The Star Trek franchise has "hundreds of original novels," 11 (almost 12) movies, and 5 TV Series as well as much more merchandise than the Harry Potter franchise. Ergo, Star Trek is bigger and has more money.

There's a “U” and “I” in union but just an “I” in my beliefs

Batman.

Allons-y!

Star Wars.

One can argue whether or not Harry Potter was a good book series - I, for one, enjoyed it.

But, Potter is most likely the biggest book franchise in the history of our time. Seven books, eight movies, several different tours across the globe, and portions of a theme park based on one series.

All parts of it have raked in millions, if not billions, of dollars.

So, Flood, do you think there will ever again be a series as big as Harry Potter? In the near future?
Dude, that has nothing on the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

In relation to how long Star Trek and Harry Potter has existed . . .

It's one of if not the most successful franchise and has only been around for hardly longer than a decade.

Ratio-wise

Of course, how long it will remain as popular as it is, only time will tell.

You must be kidding.

Look it up. The Books of Magic are about a teen boy with fair skin, shaggy brown hair, round glasses, and a scar on his head, who discovers he has magical powers. He is a "chosen one" of sorts with a destiny. He has a pet owl named Yo-Yo. There are good magicians against evil ones. His parents are killed. He is sent into magical parts of the world that those in the "mundane world" cannot see. The people there teach him magic. I could go on.

Any one or even few of these similarities on their own wouldn't mean much, but all together it's actually quite surprising.

The strongest Rivals are also the strongest allies.

Harry potter was a "big" series?

The Hobbit is suppose to be a 3 part trilogy...

Oh, I didn't know OP was talking about ratios; in that case you are definitely right. That aside, I completely agree with your last statement.

Well, if we're talking all media, I think Star Wars beats it out. 6 movies+ remasters/special editions, loads of novels, comics, a crap ton of games, and 2 cartoon series. Harry Potter has 7 books and 8 movies.
