Well the hobit is coming soon(or is it already out?) and I have never seen the movies at an age where i could understand them, which i hate. So, my LOTRO download just got done so what I'm thinking is start watching the movies, while playing LOTRO in preparation for the hobit.

What do you guys think?

I don't actually own the movies, but I'm sure i can get a hold of them some way or another.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the best cinematic experiences ever. There is no question here, you need to watch them.

They're decent movies with giant plot holes.

*spoilers* Why didn't they just ride the eagles into mordor? ("because the movies are about the Journey blah blah....")

“Dear humanity, we regret being alien bastards. We regret coming to Earth. And we most definitely regret that the corps just blew up our raggedy ass fleet!” -Sgt. Johnson

Watch them NOW!

The Eagles aren't Middle Earths taxi service, as per Tolkien himself.

The Eagles were never available on command. If they did fly into Mordor, Sauron would have seen them and sent the Nazgul and Fellbeasts after them. Not to mention the thousands of Orcs and Uruk Hai that would have awaited them.

Tolkien explained that in the books...

OP: I suggest you read the book(s) first. That way, you'd get more out of it. But you do what you want; either way it will be awesome.

It is a giiiiiaaaaaant Deus ex machina, that is never explained in the movies (irrelevant if explained in the books. The books are not the movies).

These eagles can make it into mordor while all the fighting is going on, but couldn't do exactly the same without the hobits having to risk life-and-limb to do so?

And they just miraculously show up out of nowhere?

Yeeaaaaah....

What? I don't remember any fighting going on when Gandalf flew in to rescue Frodo and Sam. Did we watch the same movie? Sauron was destroyed, and all the Orcs were dead or gone.

Tolkien explained that in the books...

Might not be a plot hole in the books - is unexplained in the movies.

Am I to take it you must read the books to understand the events of the movies then?

Well they also flew in during the battle at the Black Gate to distract the Fellbeasts.

That's how ancient and mysterious the Eagles are! You will learn more of the Eagles' relationship with Middle Earth in the Hobbit movies.

How exactly are did they "make it into mordor while all the fighting is going on"? They didn't. They rescued Frodo and Same AFTER the destruction of Baradur (aka Sauron aka the guy keeping the Nazguls flying beasts alive).

They fight with the Nazgul/Fell Beasts. They don't defeat them. Sauron recalls the Nazgul when he relizes the Ring is at the Cracks of Doom. It's not as if the Eagles can waltz into Morder unopposed. Plus that would be the kind of tactic Sauron would expect.

Haha, I wish people used similar lines for the Star Wars movies. "Woh, woh... you can't understand the events of teh second trilogy (which was made first) without watching the prequels! (Which were made second)!"

But from what I've heard, hobbit movies don't stand up to the original trilogy. Which is unfortunate. The moves were very decent. I've watched them quite a few times.

  • 12.11.2012 12:34 PM PDT

Pass the controller bro

Those -blam!- hobbit movies were boring
as hell. All it was, was a bunch of people walking, three movies of
people walking to a -blam!- volcano.

  • 12.11.2012 12:37 PM PDT

This is what I'm seeing from you guys "They couldn't send the eagles in, they would have been seen and the nazguls would have gone after them" "they distracted the nazguls"

So... What's the problem? They could distract the nazguls, but couldn't fly in because they would have gained the attention of the nazguls....?????

Nah I was just saying the Eagles are almost separated from the events of Middle Earth, and you can't know that without reading the books really. Wasn't trying to disprove ya.

I mentioned the Hobbit because it very likely there will be a discussion between Gandalf and the Eagles which will foreshadow their actions in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. So keep an eye and ear out!
