What do you guys know about the Android 4.1 update? My carrier, Cspire, doesn't appear to officially offer it for my phone (Samsung Galaxy SIII) yet. Do any of you have this carrier? Do you know when it's coming? I reaaaaaaaaaally want to use Google Now.

I don't think I'll be getting the update any time soon. The DROID Razr Maxx that I use literally has the exact same hardware, minus NFC, as the MAXX HD with the 4.1 update, so there is no good reason on the planet why I can't get it yet.

Unlock, root, install a custom ROM. Voila.

Everything is interesting if you go into it deeply enough.

It's a decent improvement over 4.0. Biggest thing is it's much smoother.

I've had bad luck rooting androids in the past. I like the OS the way it is now, I don't really have any desire for custom ROM.

Yeah I could use some more smoothness. Stuff randomly crashes or backs out sometimes. Are there many/any interface changes?

Well, then you're going to have to wait for your carrier to push the OTA update to your phone.

Not sure, I haven't run vanilla for over a year so I couldn't say what is in vanilla vs the ROM I'm running

Does ROM completely redo the interface?

As for rooting/unlocking/installing rom etc, at what point is my warranty voided? I would love to have CM on my RAZR Maxx, or some other rom similar, but how do I actually do it?

Well it depends on the ROM. None that I know of stray far from vanilla, but they do add a lot of nice features.

I'd strongly recommend flashing CM10 to your S3. It's essentially stock 4.1.2 with better battery life, and the ugly TouchWiz overlay is gone. It's also fairly straightforward if you follow a tutorial (search XDA).

Basically three steps to it:

-Flash ClockWorkMod recovery via ODIN
-Make a Nandroid backup of your current firmware
-Flash the CM10 image

You can even reset the binary/flash counter with an app called TriangleAway in order to preserve your warranty.

It is SO much better than 4.0. Just do some research on how to root your phone and install a custom rom. I suggest Cyanogenmod.

I love CM10.1 on my Nexus 4 and 7. I've been a big supporter for a while.

I'd recommend seeing if there is a Cyanogenmod 10 build for your phone. Root it, flash it. I've got jelly bean on my android, thanks to CM10, and it runs amazingly well.

Will I loose all of my settings/apps/etc in the root process? how far does CM stray from Vanilla interface and operation?

I know it's out but my carrier does not have it yet. What carrier do you have? Mine is CSpire Personal Wireless.

Depends on your carrier and when they'll push out the OTA update.

I love mine. If you can get your hands on one, do it.

VZW made it a pain in the ass for the Galaxy Nexus to get prompt updates, so it's no wonder why this is only a GSM phone. Though, the first thing I did was unlock and root it while I patiently awaited a CM rom for it.

Yeah the price for it make it sell like hotcakes

Yep. Combined with the fact I jumped on the $30 TMobile prepaid plan, I'm saving $60/month by ditching Verizon.
