Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

I feel like that is a broad over-reach of government power.

A license to reproduce would be unconstitutional.

In Griswold v. Connecticut, the supreme court ruled that the constitution protects a right to marital privacy under the 14th amendment.

CamCamm: How does that work?

The Joyeuse IP Formula

Okay, as the proud owner of female reproductive organs that are capable of child bearing, I'm going to say no.

Let me make myself clear that I am not currently a parent and I am also pro-choice.

Parents need to be given the resources to prepare for their child, look into adoption options, or have birth control/contraception available. Wouldn't it be nice if all parents were certified by some means? Hell yeah, but I don't want to have to jump through a bunch of hoops and have the government tell me whether or not I'm allowed to carry a kid.

Parenting is very tough. I helped raise my little brother to help out my single mother. Trust me when I say that while we weren't financially stable for a while, my mother was still a capable parent.

On the other hand, my dad was mentally abused as a child by his own mother, and nobody suspected it. My father's family never really saw financial hardship, but mentally some of them were just out there.

And that's the thing; you can't test or certify competence. You can confirm someone's sanity and you can't base someone's ability to raise a child based on academics or income.

So, no. There shouldn't be a license to have a child. There should be improved resources for hopeful parents and a better way to take neglected children out of bad situations.

Should a license be required to breath?

For you, yes. Since you can't seem to spell breathe properly.

I'd support something like this. I do think that certain requirements should be met in order to have children. (Not things like ethnic screening, or genetics. Nothing that extreme.) Just things like criminal history, income, things like that. (Factors, not standards.)

Why or why not? If so, what sort of conditions would be required to obtain a pass?
I'm in favor. There should be a minimum income requirement and a drug test in order to obtain a license. Unlicensed children should be taken to government run foster homes.
Pretty much sums up my opinion regarding this matter.

While I don't disagree, how would you even begin to enforce that? Fine anyone who gets pregnant w/o authorization? Fine the father? (easy enough with paternity tests)

And what about the embryo? Would abortions be administered for unauthorized births? Or would the mother be forced to put it up for adoption? (Thus making the entire process moot)

Again, I don't disagree with this idea. I just think the logistics would be a nightmare. (Ethically, and practically)

Nah. In order to do this, you'd have to take the child and have the government pay for its rearing, education, and everything else. I doubt we'd really save any money or foster any social benefit in that way.

We should just stop attaching federal backup and safety nets to having children. The best way to disincentivize something is to remove any benefits it may incur.

No food stamps, welfare, or anything else attached to the number of dependents in your family. No dependent deduction, child care tax credit, earned income credit, or any other tax benefit associated with having children.

You'll see birth rates go down and you'll see the average family income children are born into go up.

In the future we'll see cops approach a pregnant woman, flash their badge and perform an on-site abortion if they fail to provide a license.
