If you can't interpret studies, I wouldn't suggest performing any.
Looking at the statistics from the first study, the majority of homicides are someone you know, during an altercation, grabs the first thing they can kill you with (gun, knife, and then blunt object) and then kills you. I submit that spontaneous use of lethal force is enabled by having something (read: anything) lethal at hand. In these scenarios the best killing tool is the go to weapon and then used. Removing the best killing tool will not stop homicides in a meaningful way, just increase the use of knives, blunt objects, and strangulation.
Same in suicides. It is the most reliable method, therefore it is the most popular. If you remove guns people then have to chose the next most reliable method. You'd see more people cutting, using poison, smothicating/hanging, or jumping.
Doesn't take a genius to make an observation that the best tool is the one most frequently used. If you take nails out of the picture, people will use screws and pegs and glue.
