There is no denying Cortana loved the chief. If you don't agree play halo 4 ...

She always wanted to touch him, she was more loyal to him than mankind (negating any she was just a robot claim), she was scared of death but died anyway for chief's sake., she stayed with him etc...

that's textbook love to me.

She was an AI yes, but she was a copy of a brain, and our brains are the ones that manage feelings.

but how do you think she loved the chief as lovers, or as friends?

Well, that's kind of hard to say. Although the Chief's love for her was seemed purely platonic, the fact that she wanted to touch him and her tone during that final scene seems to suggest that there was a romantic aspect of her feeling towards him.

Don't do anything you wouldn't want to have to explain to paramedics. Trust me, I'm a pilot.

Considering what they went through and the fact that, as you said, she is a smart A.I. (and a rampant one at that), I think it may be possible that she developed a close attachment towards the Chief. However, A.I.s, canonically-speaking, are diligent in performing their duties, which, in Cortana's case, meant sacrificing John if necessary, as stated in the Fall of Reach. I personally don't think it was anything more than a fond attachment, as everyone, even Cortana herself, knew what she was, and the consequential limitations of her being.

One of her duties was taking care of mankind and she bluntly said that she was not doing it for humanity and coupled with the fact that "she knew her limitations" more than she wished she didn't had those limitations

"I waited so long to do that"

I do believe games are higher tier than books.(in fact they are)

I think he loved her deep down, but didn't realise that until the very end when he accepted his humanity, by which time it was of course too late. That's part of the tragedy.

Cortana and the Chief have done some amazing things together (Battle of Alpha Halo, Delta Halo, The Ark, taking control of a Covenant flagship, to name a few) and he went to great lengths to ensure that he got her back (fighting through a Flood-infested High Charity) so it wouldn't really surprise me if there was something unspoken between them.

And let us not forget that he even went against orders issued by Captain DelRio, a person of higher rank than the Chief, to have her taken away.

Which makes me think that, if she really isn't dead as some people claim, then he is going to stop at nothing to find her again in Halo 5.

"Connnectivity"

Theirs is a connection,

deeper than circuitry

Beyond that of man and machine

deeper still;the electric flash of synapse

It is bound in destiny; fortified in trust

deeper than blood
greater than love

Theirs is a union

the "Demon" and the goddess
the warrior and the intellect

Built for destruction Created for war

To deliver peace; through force and fire

Against an enemy from beyond the stars

Advanced and devout

In their wake; only glass
and the echoed screams of the dying

Threatened by oblivion; Tested by the promise of eternity

Yet they remain;
these two as one

Somewhere, out amongst the vast cold of the universe proper

They journey forth, into the unknown

This princess, of light and reason
This weapon, of flesh and bone

Was that from Evolutions?

Frankly and quite honestly, no. And even if 343i foolishly choose to try and make canon, I'll still say no. I never got that sort of connection from them. Extremely close does not always mean lovers, and I never got that vibe at all from either Chief or Cortana...frankly I find it a rather absurd idea to be in Halo >_> It worked in Mass Effect with Joker and EDI, but I don't think it's something that'd really fit or work very well in Halo, so I say no.

Agreed.

I think people are jumping the gun on the definition of love. No, they were not and never will be 'lovers', that's utterly ridiculous and is absolutely not what Halo 4 portrayed. But Cortana has developed to be a part of John over the series, yet she has never been able to make physical contact with him - they are together, yet totally separate.

In Halo 3, he was very much lost without her - though the effect of this somewhat lost its value considering he had Thel, Johnson and Miranda by his side the whole time. Cortana provided the outlet for John's humanity, we see this right off the bat in Halo CE where he changes from being all stoic and officical to making a playful jibe towards her.

Nobody cares about anyone else's opinion - be it mine, yours, or a cult of angry star wars nerds - when they are enjoying what they enjoy.

Everyone cares about opinions, that's why we socialize on a forum with strangers.

You have to remember that the process of creating the neural link between MC and Cortana brought them as close as anyone can ever be. They were literally inside each other's heads. The intensity of that sort of connection is not possible between any two humans. It was a unique relationship and I don't think it qualifies as simple friendship or love, at least not in the sense that we normally use those words, but something else entirely.

My theory is that after a while, MC and Cortana effectively became two elements of a single individual. (Think of MC/Cortana as a single person due to the neural link.)

Haters are going to hate.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

I wouldn't say that loving someone and being a lover to someone are the exact same thing. I've always seen thier relasionship as something more platonic. They're both tools, and they've only known work (John more or less), in their world there hasn't been room for more, and that's what they're used to. However, within their work, there is some rool for personality, and whilst working, they've learnt to value one anothers. They click, they're comfortable with one another and both would trust each other with their lifes.

Haven't sensed it so much from the games, and it might be too late for that now, but I've always imagined that they're both a bit scared of what would happen if the circumstances that have been keeping them together all this time, would change. Their relasionship has been a product of the war, etc, how would they behave if all of that was removed? Adventure to the end!

At the end of Halo 4 Cortana revealed to John that she's "waited so long to do that", when touching him. That's the first time that I sensed that they might be aiming towards a more romantic relasionship. Hope it isn't as blunt as yet another ordinary love situation, whatever they do. Turn Cortana physical, and mutate John to something compatible, and have them finish the Didact and the Librarians love arc... (half jokingly).

I didn't get that at all. Her whole operational life she has been an artificial construct, one with such a vast sum of knowledge with the power to do almost anything except touch. This is reflected beautifully in her soliloquy at the start of Shutdown where she states she'll never know if Requiem's sun looks real. Traviss' Human Weakness also goes into detail on this sort of thing too. We also see it in Legends where she imagines herself wiping away the condensation on John's cryo pod.

It just so happens that the first thing she is able to physically touch is John, one can more or less draw a double-meaning from this - she has waited so long to be able to physically interact with something independantly, and she has waited so long to have a real physical connection with the person she has been stuck with for so many years now.

Cortana has never had anyone else buy Chief, and Chief had never has anyone else close to him in his life like Cortana. I belive they "loved" each other, but as a close friend, or family like.

Posted by: ajw34307Oh, I never fully got the feeling that they were aiming towards it, it's just that it was the first time something happened that made me think they might.

The scene definitely got across that that she simply longed to know what it felt like to touch, no more, no less. But, on top of that, it could mean that it's one of many things that she's wondered about, and first now, when it is closer to a reality, might start to desire.

Although, I've no idea how hormones, etc, works within a hard-light brain, if there even are any.. so...

They definitely love each other. But not romantically I think. They were as close as two people can be, but I don't think lovers is the right word for their relationship.

Zerogreenchief is eh pretty cool guy, eh trolls people and doesn't afraid of anything.

I dont think the chief "loved" cortana.

He acted purely out of a sense of duty to the point of losing his humanity and essentially being a robot. It was his primary concern (after saving the galaxy of course) to protect cortana at any cost.

I have many issues with halo 4, but I will give them one last chance to redeem themselves with halo 5, if they can push the chief redeeming his humanity.

I was going yo say this. She also says she'll never be able to know if the star feels real, as well. Her facial expression when she says 'feel' was emphasised, too. I think it was solely because she's not been able to touch, that she stated she's always wanted to do that.

Being able to touch is clearly something that she's desired, and to finally be able to do that it felt - pardon the pun - amazing (for lack of a better word). Perhaps it was extra special because the first thing she was able to touch was someone she deeply cares about.

I don't think it's love. Well, not romantically at least.

I think she does love the chief....but not in a romantic sense. More like a motherly sort of love. After all she is a creation from the brain of Dr. Hasley, who was a mother figure to the spartans.

Agreed, but I think Cortona may loved MC, if it is possible for an AI to be in love.
