I dont think the chief "loved" cortana.

He acted purely out of a sense of duty to the point of losing his humanity and essentially being a robot. It was his primary concern (after saving the galaxy of course) to protect cortana at any cost.

I have many issues with halo 4, but I will give them one last chance to redeem themselves with halo 5, if they can push the chief redeeming his humanity.
I disagree. You could feel the sadness and fear radiating through his armor. He tried to rationalize his feelings with duty, but he clearly felt something real for Cortana.

I think he loved her deep down

No. Just no.

He valued her as a friend and that's it. John has lost a lot more in his life than an AI. I really hope 343i don't milk this Cortana stuff too much. She's gone it was sad for John but he'll get over it. Give him Black Box instead.

I think you're misunderstanding what he means by 'love'. It's not restricted to just romantic love, you know?

I don't know what Cortana's feelings for the chef were. Maybe she just thought he could make a mean burger.

Considering what they went through and the fact that, as you said, she is a smart A.I. (and a rampant one at that), I think it may be possible that she developed a close attachment towards the Chief. However, A.I.s, canonically-speaking, are diligent in performing their duties, which, in Cortana's case, meant sacrificing John if necessary, as stated in the Fall of Reach. I personally don't think it was anything more than a fond attachment, as everyone, even Cortana herself, knew what she was, and the consequential limitations of her being.

Yes, but being a smart AI, doesn't she have the choice to not obey orders? Correct me if im wrong, but I think Cortana is definetely able to love and have feelings. She even stated in the second mission that she was the only AI ever made from living tissue, witch I take as a clue from 343 that she does, in fact, love the Cheif.

When Cortana told him he'll be given another AI, or a copy of her, he said very forcibly: 'That's not going to happen.'

You realise the relationship he had with Cortana was different to the one he had with anyone else, don't you? She wasn't just someone he saw or talked to; she was in his head - in his mind. An extension of himself. He barely functioned in Halo 3 without her, not quipping a single joke until he found her with the 'thought I'd shoot my way out, mix things up a little' even though he arguably had other friends around him, such as Johnson.

Her being gone is like a lobotomy. They knew each other only for a few months, but they shared a connection like no other has ever shared. When his last chance to physically take her back is snatched away as the terminal her crystal is in disintegrates, his steady and confident baritone falters and he sounds very vulnerable when he shouts 'Cortana!'

Everything in Halo 4 screamed to me that John loved her, from body language to inflection to mise-en-scene. I'm not saying he loved her in a romantic sense. 'Theirs is a connection, greater than love.' She was a part of him, and he was a part of her; it goes beyond simple love. They're symbiotic.

He won't accept another AI, and if you think he'll just plug Black Box in and become best friends in the next game then you completely missed almost all the subtext of Halo 4.

Trying to get Waypoint to update Halo 3 stats in detail like here. Now no one can see that my Halo 3 Spartan no longer looks like my Reach Spartan.

I'm quoting a poem there, from Evolutions. It was posted earlier in the thread. Nothing we know can be a greater connection than love, but we can't share minds with the people we love. I think he loved her as a friend/family, but I think it also went beyond that - she was, like I said, a part of himself.

I think she did by the way she looked and talked to him, but MC was oblivious to it. She was more of a "only true friend" to him than anything else.

He doesn't love a computer programme, he seen her more than she was and it hit him hard because of it. And Black Box would be a good replacement. It could add hostilities and open another part of John's character.

The Chief loved Cortana as a very close friend, more than that because he literally shared his mind with her. And you seem to be implying that Cortana is somehow inferior and unworthy of love due to her artificial nature. She is clearly as complex and human as any real person. Cheif didn't see her as more than she was, he saw her as she was, his closest friend and all he really has left.

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.

Love is feeling that remains difficult to explain for humans, so I wouldn't try to categorized what Cortana felt for the Chief. Their synergy and care for each other had many traits of what people describe as romantic love as well as friendship. What matters is they shared something unique, something that changed them both, for the better. They gave each other strength. Lover or friends? Their physical depiction and interaction in the last scene makes me think perhaps both.

I am Katsu Kage, an assassin trained in the art of stealth. I was on a recon mission when I discovered a blue box hidden among some rubble. Once I entered the blue box it had taken me to a land far away. It was strange and fantastic! There I met PatikaVoom, the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. She showed me this land, then returned with me to the blue box. She called it a TARDIS and seemed to know how to work it. We left together and have been on many adventures, with many more to come!

It's hard to tell

Lets Boogie

I don't think the Chief sees Cortana in a romantic sense. I think he sees Cortana as more of a mother like figure. I do remember her image replacing his actual mother in one of those halo 4 trailers, when John flashbacks.

And personally i don't think Cortana sees John as her lover, but then again some people can interpret her relationship with him as a romantic one. After all, i can see why they think so.
