Subject: Signing your own posts -- necessary?

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Since we still have nothing to talk about still, I began thinking about something most of us have an opinion on; signing posts. Is signing a post really necessary? What is supposed to symbolize?

I've seen many members over the years who always signed their name or a shortened version of their name, such as TGP or Hawkeye, but I've always kind of seen it as being a useless way to waste a few extra seconds of your day. It is always necessary to sign a birthday card, a letter, and checks and receipts. When you use a signature it is a way of formally finishing a transaction or a personal message or letter to another individual. Participating in a group discussion on a web forum doesn't really require a personal signature, in my opinion.

Before you read this post, you probably noticed my avatar, maybe the Mythic title bar, the topic obviously caught your attention as well (whether it be for the sake of a new thread in the Septagon for a change, or you have an opinion on the matter as well), but one thing I can comfortably accuse all of you of is that you probably looked to see who made this post before you read it. That is the natural order of contributing to a forum, right?

Read topic title> note author of the topic> read body of thread> decide whether or not you want to reply/read other responses> respond yourself/leave with responding, right?

To me, signing your post is just an eye sore you slapped on my monitor while I am casually scrolling through. I personally feel it is an attempt to single yourself out from the crowd, maybe get some attention. I don't like it.

One scenario in which I feel it is necessary is if someone where to edit a post that was originally posted by someone else. Then it would be okay to maybe sign the bottom and include a reason for the edit. But then again, the edit time stamp does include the individuals name if it wasn't the original poster....

How do you feel?

And go ahead, I am expecting 80% of the replies to include signatures.

I agree. It seems silly. I mean, regarding Bnet posts, it would be alright with me if you were signing it as a gamertag or something that is different than your username. Stuff like that. But other than that or a moderator edit signature? Just seems to be a pointless waste of time, both to the poster and the reader to me.

I usually read the topic way before I look at who wrote it... >_>

Still, it is kinda silly. I don't need to know that Yorkie is still Yorkie... haha

Hmm, that is interesting to me. I would still guess that most people would take note of the author first though.

Mythic members are like people with tattoos. Just as soon as you become a Mythic member, you can kick anyone's ass. It really works.

Really I think that's only if their avatar is familiar to them. No one pays attention to names anymore.

It made sense when they used to delete inactive accounts, but now that they don't do that, there is no point and everyone who signs their post are dumd heads.

  • 12.11.2012 9:55 PM PDT

I've never signed any of my posts, but when other users do, it doesn't bother me.

Used to be against them, as long as they don't take up a lot of space (for example, a quote or some long name), I have no problem with them (obviously). And no, clearly it's not necessary. That's just a dumb question.

e: Also, people who say "hurr durr just click the arrow for the signature", that's not the same as signing a post. Clearly. There was a thread a few days ago asking who actually looks at that thing, and the overwhelming and near unanimous answer was "never". So to imply that that arrow-down feature serves the same purpose as an in-post signature is silly.

It is essentially the same thing. When you recognize an avatar, you automatically connect a username to the avatar therefore you know who the author is.

I tend to ignore posts that have signatures, because the signature ends up being all I notice when I scroll down through threads. The only reason to my mind that someone might use it is for obnoxious ": )" signatures to make them seem less of a jerk than what they are, or for abstract allowed-characters that make them stand out in a thread.

I can accept and put up with shorthand versions of your username, but even then it strains my attention.

Manual signatures are for emails and formal Facebook messages. Not for forums.

I used to sign my posts with stuff like "*Head explodes*" or something like that. It basically involves me being brutally killed.

Maybe I should do that again.

I dislike signatures. I find them annoying. There is a spot for you to put your signature. But most people don't see it because they don't give a damn about your signature. I hardly ever look at peoples signatures, why you ask? Because I don't give a damn about your signature.

I wouldn't really consider that a signature. At least not in the sense that I'm talking about. Your type of signature adds an extra effect or emotion that connects to what you had to say.

And this, my friends, is why the actual site-implemented signatures is still important.
