Quite frankly- it's people trying to take the easy way out by labelling everything a disorder that is out of their control.

Pathetic.

Godshatter: I can go all the way with someone without being attracted to them.
CamCamm: How does that work?
Godshatter: I'm easily aroused by anything that moves. It's a curse.
Brain says 'No, that's ugly', body says 'ugly is fine with me'.

Seriously? Are they really making this a disorder? wow.

Its like going to Hong Kong for a whole year. Suddenly ill be diagnosed with it if I don't get used to the time change!?

Time Zone Change Disorder?

It's kind of stupid that it's being labeled as a disorder.

Today a young man on acid realized that we are merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are one conciousness experiencing its self subjectively. Life is but a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves.

Were it so easy... I wish time management could at least have even a remotely positive effect.

I have been working in a Level 1 Trauma Center for 2 years now and the time management thing appears to work, at first. But you soon find yourself sliding into the nearly inescapable bouts of alternating, inappropriate sleep cycle that ends upbringing about the aforementioned need to sleep during your shift and sleeplessness during the day.

The explanation lies within our pineal gland in the brain. When it's dark out (artificial light is not the same), the gland picks up on this and releases Melatonin (which is actually even sold as a sleep aid OTC). Melatonin coaxes the brain and body to start the sleep cycle causing our bodies to shut down for needed rest. Many nights I have tried to fight this malady only to nearly succumb to its encumbrance. Thanks to my co-workers who understand. We all keep a watch on eachother because being caught sleeping on the job by a supervisor is instant termination. No verbal warnings or write ups. Just plain fired. So stressful and I believe this is why night crews get paid a differential increase. I am actually now interested in the medication pointed out in OP's link and I'm not even a pill popper (anymore heheh).

I hope this study can also help keep folks like me from getting fired on the spot seeing as the med community is beginning to take it seriously.

OP, thank you for this post. I'm surprised I haven't encountered it myself considering my line of work. Thanks again.

wat

Ya know, it is pretty much scientific fact melatonin production slows to a halt around artificial light.

I do remember reading about that. However, many studies concluded that it was somewhat indeterminate and they were going to pursue the type of artificial light waves being sent out from different types of lights. Point taken. Though my own personal "field research" has led me to believe otherwise.

It doesn't matter how your time management is, if you need to work all night you need to work all night.

I worked 0000-0800 or 2300-0700 for 10 years. You can feel your body during the night saying to you 'What the heck? I'm supposed to be repairing myself now'.

Doctors have told me that every year I worked all nights probably took a year off my life.

Also, driving after working all night is supposed to be as dangerous as drinking and driving.

Not surprised it can be seen as a disorder, for some people their sleep patterns are forever affected even after they stop doing the shift work.
