I just don't understand why you'd suddenly support the notion that a fetus is a person at conception just because the government declared it so. If that's the case, you should Google the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act", which declares fetuses to be legal victims in cases of violence, or the UN's policy on protecting unborn humans (I have it bookmarked at home but I'm on my laptop at school right now, or else I'd link it). It's always struck me as odd how it's legal to destroy a fetus through abortion but it's illegal to kill it by injuring the mother. I'm not going to pretend that this is all black and white, or cut and dry. The fact is that pregnancy and fetuses is a huge grey area on what is or is not a "person" and what rights that "person" has or does not have.
I don't think abortion is murder because I don't think that a first-trimester fetus can be considered a fully-functioning person, thus inheriting all of the rights that a regular person has. If the government decided to rule that all fetuses were, in fact, people with rights, then they must be doing so on a foundation of science and reason, as it probably would have gone to the Supreme Court.
When a pregnant woman is killed and the murderer is charged with two counts of murder, is usually because the woman's life and that of her fetus' was taken without her consent. I do believe that charges would be different if the mother is 2 weeks pregnant, or 8 months pregnant.
