I just finished reading the last of the books, and of course have played the games. As far as I can find, no one else knows this (outside Bungie anyway), but I'd like to hear other ideas. Why do the Covenant want to exterminate the humans and not offer them to join their ranks first?

Obviously the Covenant wasn't always brutes, prophets, elites, grunts...etc. They would most likely all joined at seperate times. I'm just wondering why they never offered the humans a place in the Covenant as a new low caste race, as would seem they would normally do.

So I'm wondering what all of your theories are on to why the Prophets decided to exterminate humanity rather than enslave it.

the theory that comes to my mind first is that the prophets KNEW we were the forerunners, or at least we led them or something, and they're simply jealous

everyone needs an enemy. kids at school form little groups and make enemies just so that the other people in their group will help protect them. Each species in the covie cant survive on its own, they need eachother. If i remember correctly the covie were spying on the humans. They saw that we are orgaanized and powerful. They saw us as a threat, not a friend. The covie forms together, and attacks Reach.

-blam!- Rage

I for one say that, to them we are their most lethal threat instead of having them among them, a deadly sorce, they will try to rid of us for good instead of risking: We join them and then betray them from the inside out, that is how they see our large population as.

Exactly. They knew we were the forerunners and according to their religion the forerunners are dead. Our existance is hieracy.

No one knows this for sure. Only the prophets (maybe only Truth) now why other species of the covenant are even confused by this (read conversations of the univers thing).

My guess is that it has something to to with the fact that humans are reclamiers. I think the prophets know why the human are relcamiers and that proberly is affecting there desision about conquering or exterminating the human race.

Just got to wait for Halo 3.
