So you know it's a hashtag and not random mumbo jumo of text.

If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Signatures are for little kids.

I think it's something to do with Twitter, not sure because I've never been to that website.

It's a way to track trends. Twitter records every hashtag and groups them. That's how they know when something is getting tons of attention.

  • 12.12.2012 10:44 PM PDT

It links all hashtags on twitter together so people know whats "trending"

Just incase. Trending is what is being talked about by a large number of people which you know because they used hashtags

It's pretty much useless to use them outside of twitter OP.

I use them from time to time on twitter.

They're kind of like keywords you can use that link your tweet to others with the same hashtag. For example, during the concert for Sandy relief, there might have been (but I'm not sure) a hashtag such as #sandyrelief. What this means is you could click on it and see what other people thought about it.

I guess the best thing to describe it is a way to organize tweets together that otherwise wouldn't be found together because they don't contain the same text.

This doesn't work for Facebook but the whole Twitter concept is really cool.

I'm pretty sure they don't do anything on facebook, but people are just too used to using them that they do it anyway.

U_WOT_M8.avi

it's called the "pound sign" or "number symbol" outside of the internet.
it has plenty of uses IRL.

anyways on twitter they organize posts into a searchable, categorized, aggregateable format.
