Subject: What kind of villain does the Flood like?

I'm trying to get the gist of a fictional villain I'm creating for a project of mine. I just want to know what this population would like.

Ideas:

-Intelligent/Calm/Evil
(Will out-smart and insult the protagonist and keep coming back like an old-school comic book villain. Someone the reader resents.)

-Psychotic/Extremely Pissed-Off
(Just wants to spill your guts...and eat them. Someone the reader fears.)

-Psychotic/Intelligent/Rational Motives
(Uses cryptic speech to explain rational yet harsh motives, but is still crazy and still wants to kill the protagonist. Someone the reader may or may not agree with depending on their personal beliefs/opinions.)

-Silent/Evil/Ruthless
(Doesn't say much, but would rather make a point with a bullet than with words. Someone the reader can't predict.

3rd edition. Now with more grunt.

TFS 4 lyfe

Someone who I love to hate, hopefully with a reason to sympathize with as well.

Psychotic/intelligent/calm.

These are the villains who know how to get -blam!- done.

I think a good example of this are both of the Sith Emperors (Palpatine and Vitiate).

in·dif·fer·ence
the fact or state of being indifferent; lack of care or concern and empathy demonstrated by an absence of emotional reactions.

Intelligent/calm/evil is my personal fave.

Gus Fring - Breaking Bad
Mr Freeze - Batman

I'm just going to say funny and intelligent I guess. Intelligent in the way that, per say, you and 100 of your guys are surrounding this evil dude ready to shoot him, he won't be all like, "mwuahaha you'll never defeat meh cos ima *insert name*"

  • 12.13.2012 3:22 AM PDT

This. All of it.

Gus Fring - Breaking Bad

Uh huh, uh huh. This type of character falls under Magnificent Bastard. That archetype is in my opinion by far the best type of a villain. I think it is probably good that not every villain falls into the category, otherwise when one came along they wouldn't be so impressive.

Emperor Palpatine

Loses some coolness points for talking major smack and then begging like a baby for his life. He is certainly manipulative, but when a villain's plans come down to the results of a single light saber fight or expecting a son to murder his own father and join the enemy he was fighting so desperately against... well, you kind of question how this guy became a Sith Lord in the first place.

I can't make him a true Magnificent Bastard because the villain was once the superior of the protagonist. The protagonist carried out a mutiny against him and sent the villain into a sort of "exile". The villain really wants to kill the protagonist and vise-versa. The protagonist hates the villain.

Death to rank junkies.

One who is evil for the sake of being evil. If I can relate to them, it's harder to hate them. Villains should be hated.

Here is the Slayer of Cake. May he find piece in death after a life full of violence and unrest battling the tyranny of desserts.

If you're referring to his fight with Windu there is a lot of debate on whether he purposely lost the battle and was purposely begging to try and show Anakin that the Jedi were bad.

If you're referring to episode 6 then I think it isn't that bad to think that he would kill his own son if you've read all the -blam!- Vader had done to people between the third and sixth movies.

-Psychotic/Intelligent/Rational Motives
Reminds me of the Reapers, and Agent Smith from the Matrix. It really creates this balanced conflict that engages the reader and gives them a sense of immersion in which the villain is a human whom they could sympathize with, and choose whether to support or condemn.

Quick as a razor, sharp as a bullet.

Complex, sympathetic, humble beginnings.

Kahlis. Mikavel. Turtas. Fractus.

Oh, sorry, none of you know characters in my books.

<(-_-)> Teh mokey is not amused

As long as the villain makes sense, I don't mind what they're like.

E.G If you're making a cold and calculated villain, don't make their motive something like love because it makes no sense. Also give them as much backstory as possible. Don't have a guy who wants to take over the world for the sake of it or anything too cliche.

If they were good enough to be published, and not just something that you pretend matters in your spare time, we might do.

OT - The sort that blurs the line between good/evil and what's right/wrong. Kind of like Ozymandias.

  • 12.13.2012 4:52 AM PDT

Octavia is best pony.

I like villains who blur the lines of good and evil, making it hard to decide whether the hero is really fighting for the right side or not. Often times their intentions are largely good or sympathetic, but their methods are questionable.

EDIT: Damn it. The guy ^^above^^ me said exactly the same thing, with exactly the same phrasing.
