Subject: What are 5 movies you think everyone should see?

I know, right?
Jay acts like she's better than everyone else simply because she's a chick.
I hope she chokes to death.

List them ITT (with your reasons why, if you want). You can only pick five, no honourable mentions or ties for any spots.

In no particular order:

1. The Princess Bride - this is a classic for a reason: it's hilarious and witty, with some eminently quotable lines. "You warthog-faced buffoon!"
2. Love, Actually - whatever, haters, rom-coms are great. And this is possibly the best one of all time: all-star cast, lots of heartwarming moments, and just enough cheesiness to make it an enjoyable feel-good film without it becoming overbearingly cloying.
3. The Avengers - the superhero movie all other superhero movies wish they could be. I saw it three times in cinemas and will probably watch it a zillion more times on DVD.
4. Hot Fuzz - is this basically the best British movie of all time? I have watched it at least half a dozen times now, and my sisters have watched it at least twice that many. The fight scenes at the end are comedy gold.
5. The Devil Wears Prada - Meryl Streep. Stanley Tucci. Emily Blunt. Anne Hathaway. 'Nuff said.

If I ever get AIDS, I'm going to sleep with another AIDS person so my AIDS cancel each other out, or I'm going to make the AIDS I already have worse.

The Dark Knight is the superhero movie every superhero should be, not a Michael Bay movie with Robert Downey Jr.

Just for the record, cough syrup is the bane of my existence.

TDK is pretty overrated. It was a good movie and all, but I doubt Heath Ledger would have won any awards for his performance if his life hadn't ended in such a tragic way shortly afterwards. That sounds pretty insensitive, but it's true.

Forrest Gump
Jurrasic Park
Shawshank Redemption
These are the three from your list that I've seen. I thought all three were pretty overrated, but I enjoyed Forrest Gump a lot nonetheless.

Yes, though I maintain that anyone can enjoy Love, Actually. IT'S A CLASSIC, DAMN IT

I actually haven't seen any of the ones on your list, though Donnie Darko sounds pretty good.

The Wonderful LeSieg!

OP's list is disappointing.

1. The Departed - the pinnacle of cops and robbers type movies.
2 - 5. Anything with Tom Hanks - seriously we are living in the life of a legend.

Heh...wasn't flaming, just an observation. And I've just remembered you are from Sapphire, which I am a member but rarely go to anymore.

And yes, Love Actually is actually an okay film. Not too soppy for me to enjoy with my girlfriend.

My boyfriend is a huge fan of his. I think he's okay, I just don't really get the hype.

Pretty weird indeed, but in a good way, IMO.

I've watched it around 10 times.

That's funny, my significant other doesn't like him either, maybe a good Tom Hanks dynamic is essential to a relationship?

Per Audacia Ad Astra

5 movies is simply not enough.

Well, I don't dislike him, I just don't think he's all that great.

I understand that to some people, he's a reason to see a movie no matter what it is, just like Robert Downey Jr is with me (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is in my top five favourite movies of all time, though I didn't include it in the OP because I don't think it's really a movie everyone can appreciate). I'm just not feeling it with him, I guess.

The idea is that it's more challenging to limit the list to 5 than it is to just list all of your favourite movies. :P

Pretty hard to just pick 5 movies, but these are the ones I thought of first.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Breakfast Club
The Godfather
Alien
Pulp Fiction
