So no, there isn't any useless degree from an accredited school.

Not true. I agree that if you get into an accredited school you should be able to get a job or have a career no matter what you major in, but that's not always the case.

For example, my brother's ISEE tutor went to Harvard. Now she's teaching 10 year olds how to take a standardized test... come on.
My cousin who also went to Harvard majored in linguistics and is now basically a secretary for a scientist at CalTech.

However, my other cousin majored in African-American studies at UCSD and is in law school now, so just goes to show that any major can be not useless.

English, Philosophy, Linguistics, History, any foreign language, Gender studies, African-American studies...

You pretty much have to go into academia and write a book if you major in one of these.

So, you're saying I could be a fantastic lawyer without a philosophy background?
Or do social work, work in a third world nation, or developmental work without a gender or cultural studies?

Again, it's so sad people actually think with such a linear thought process. There are more to it than the sciences and maths.

Obviously, but those just tend to be the careers people take. Read my other post and you'll see that I don't believe there is no hope if you major in something like this. But yes, you could be a fantastic lawyer without a philosophy background. One of my cousins majored in electrical engineering but decided he wants to be a lawyer, and is currently at Stanford Law.

Anything that isn't job related. If you go for any bull-blam!- like pyschology, or history, or anything your just -blam!- stupid. Go to a tech school and learn how to work on stuff, get into technology and electronics and robotics, don't go for anything stupid.

Psychologists make a lot of money, don't know what you're talking about.

Agreed. All the changes are good and add variety. Do we really want another Halo 3? Just running around with one gun and no armor abilities? It's good that 343 wants to try something new. Do we really want the same thing for three more games?

Too many idiots pretending they know what they're talking about.
I can come in here, say "liberal arts lolol" and then not give an explanation and chalk it up to "Nuff' said" and pretend I'm an intelligent human being.

I can, just try me.

You're too funny. You make it seem like unless someone has a 6 figure job, or is making a huge name for themselves, they're not doing anything productive or prestigious.

For some people, that might be what they want. For me, I want to work with children one day. I'm not sure if I'll be going to law school after my undergrad or going for social psych, I'm not sure. But you're making it sound like they're a failure because of that. What matters is if you like your job and you're able to live contently. So many people, yourself included from the sounds of it, have this bastardized view that success is only in one field, of one type of pay grid, and that you know definitively what success and usefulness even is.

Too funny.

She didn't want to be a tutor, but that's all she could find. Maybe I should blame the job market, I don't know.

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

Why do people think Psychology has no jobs?

If anything there is going to be a greater need for it if mental health issues keep rising in frequency.

Or do people assume that Psychology = Research only.

There's clinical, evolutionary (not what you all think), social, business and work, developmental and several other minor branches. Not to mention you can use that as a teachable, too. People just assume this and that without actually knowing what they are talking about.

My University has a section on the site that lists job postings for students up to 2 years after they graduate of jobs available. You can search key words or related to your major. There are no shortages of jobs out there in any given field at all.

Are they always your desired position? No. But you have to start somewhere. A piece of paper doesn't entitle you to the best of the best immediately.

As an economics major, I can assure you it is not a popular degree in the slightest. Economics bores people witless.

It depends on what you intend to do with your degree. If you want a high-paying job and access to a healthy job market, a medieval literature degree probably isn't going to help you with that. If you want to stay in academia and devote your life to studying that kind of thing, though, it might not be a bad choice. It all depends on what you plan to do after you graduate.

If you're interested in obtaining an MBA or a law degree (or a librarian certification, interestingly enough) you can pretty much major in anything as long as you have a good GPA and high entry test scores.

If you're rich and/or well-connected you can pretty much major in anything.

If you are only interested in a high-paying job you're better off majoring in something like a physical science, engineering, finance, or accounting.

How exactly is History not job related? Many people planning on moving onto Law School or heading into Politics take many classes relating to History.

Also, Majors such as History and English go hand in hand with Secondary Education. If you plan on becoming a Middle or High School teacher, you'd major in Secondary Education alongside your subject of choice.

I knew plenty of people who went into accounting and failed miserably on their accounting tests for employment despite having their fancy degrees. And while they may get first dibs on employment openings, many businesses are just finding it easier to train new than rely on graduates.

You don't need to be a CPA to practice accounting. It just means you'll hit a glass ceiling in whatever company you choose to work for.

IMO that's part of the problem in this country. You're told that you have to go to college to get a good job, so you do that, but then business start training new which makes your degree virtually meaningless, which means your investment into college was not worth the money you paid for it, which discourages people from going to college for that major, which makes businesses start b!tching and moaning about how there aren't enough prospective undergraduate employees, etc...

I'd question the college they went to if they manage to fail a CPA exam after graduating with an Accounting degree.
